a) Five steps in scanning a book:
Step: 1 - Note the title and author of the book
Step: 2 - Read the chapter headings and subheadings. to see whether the book is relevant to our needs
Step: 3 - From the chapter headings in the Table of Contents go to the relevant sections of the book and read the rst paragraph, or glance through the headings in the section
Step: 4 - Search the index for the keywords to the topic. Note the other page/pages where the subject is dealt with and refer to the appropriate pages.

Step: 5 - Look out for additional hints given by the author such as:- Words in bold, italics, underlined words, Subheadings
b) In a SQ3R slow reading technique where:

Survey - Start with surveying the materials and get the best overview of the information content.
Question - Ask specific questions to provide your reading with speci c focus.
Read - Read slowly for specific passages
Recite - Try to recite for comprehension and recall and organize the information in our mind
Review - Review the consolidation and integration of the information gathered

a) Four techniques of reading the module or materials for assignment::
i) Scanning - a fast reading technique to look for specific information
ii) Skimming – a fast reading technique to gain general impression or superficial knowledge
iii) SQ3R – detailed and analytical reading technique to thoroughly understand and evaluate the materials
iv) Background Reading – a fast reading technique to getan overview of what is being read

b) Consequences of not reading the module before tutorial:
Pre-reading helps to:i) activate your prior knowledge;
ii) build mental schemas; andiii) enable us to make intelligent connections.
This will lead to better understanding of the material we are reading and eventually build interest in the classroom
It is important that we read through the whole topic first, so that whatever is discussed in class or whatever is spoken by the tutor is familiar to us. Even if we do not understand all that is being presented, we will at least understand the basic ideas.

Being familiar with the issues raised during tutorials makes note-taking easier
Thus we must read before tutorial so that we will be well prepared.
