What is outdoor learning?

• It is active learning in the outdoors.• In Outdoor Learning children learn through

what they do, what they see and what they discover.

• Outdoor learning is real learning. It can help to bring many school subjects alive to children.

What will they learn?

• Children will learn about the world around them from first hand experience e.g. shadows, seasons, wildlife and plant life.

• They will learn how to take calculated risks, explore their curiosities, work in a team setting while also developing themselves as an individual.

• They will be able to create on a larger level and move around freely, giving them a concept of space and size.

Why is it beneficial?• Firstly, outdoor learning is extremely

beneficial to children's health. It reduces the risk of obesity and improves their physical development (agility, stamina, coordination, balance and strength).

• Being outdoors to learn instantly improves concentration levels.

• Satisfies need for challenge and excitement• Physical risk taking improves confidence,

ability to manage risks

• Classrooms can be seen as oppressive areas (children feel there is a lot of attention and expectations put on them), however in the outdoors children's confidence is boosted.

• Outdoor learning helps create stronger teacher pupil relationships as the children see teachers in a different light- more relaxed and amiable (their role is less formal).

• As well as pupil teacher relationships, the freedom of the outdoors provides a perfect opportunity to create new friendships and strengthen bonds with other children.

Risks

• We allow children take calculated risks in order to build their abilities in taking risks and confidence but are also there to support them when needed.

• Weather… “There is no such thing as bad weather only bad clothing”. Provide your child with suitable clothing and they can enjoy the outdoors whatever the weather without worries of being too cold or wet!
