Page 2: Output Devices

Computer output devices are used to

provide information for a user in

different forms. The formats include

visual, audio and digital. A CPU is

responsible for processing the

instructions and the devices are

responsible in outputting the processed

information in different formats

depending on the type of output device

we have . In the world of computers,

input/output (I/O) refers to the

communication between a computer and

the user.

Page 3: Output Devices

Input is the data sent to the system,

whereas output is the data sent by the

system to the outside world. Computer

output devices are computer hardware

equipment, that are used to communicate

the results of data processing carried out

by a computer to the user. There are a

number of devices, which produce data

in different forms, which includes audio,

video or hard copy. Light is passed

through liquid crystals to create the

pixels.

Output device of computer are types of

peripheral hardware connected, that is

connected to the computer, either using

cables or over a wireless network .

Monitor

The most common computer output

device is the monitor or computer

screen. Monitors create a visual display

from processed data that users can view.

They come in a variety of screen sizes

and visual resolutions There are two

types of computer monitors, CRT and

flat panel. CRT monitors use

phosphorescent dots to create the pixels

that make up display images. Flat panel

monitors usually use LCD or plasma to

create output.

Page 7: Output Devices

All monitors rely on a video card that is

located on the computer motherboard or

in a special expansion slot. The video card

processes the computer data into image

details that the monitors can display. A

monitor is also called as video display

terminal (VDT). The visual display of the

processed data, which the users can view

is got through the monitor.

Computer monitors come in a variety of

screen sizes and not to forget visual

resolutions.

Page 8: Output Devices

All monitors rely in a video card, which

is located on the motherboard to display

the information. It is the video card,

which processes the data into images,

which is eventually displayed on the

monitor.

Speaker

Computer speaker is the other output

device which is used to hear a sound

played by a computer. Speakers can be

built in with the motherboard or comes

as a separate part. It connects with the

computer speaker with a cable. Unlike

the old speaker’s types, modern

speakers come with USB connection

which does both functions – connection

and power supply.

Page 10: Output Devices

The built in speakers can be heard

through a headphone, if you don’t want

to buy the independent speaker set.

Headphone is also an output device

used to hear music from digital portable

players, such as MP3 players, I Pods

and stuff like that. It is designed to fit

into an ear. It is also used mostly to play

computer games and chat on line.

Page 11: Output Devices

Audio data is created by the computer

and then sent to the audio card, which is

located in an expansion slot. The card

translates the data into audio signals,

which are sent to the audio output

device.

Printer

Printer enables us to get computer

output on paper. It is one of the most

popular computer output devices we

often use to get information on paper -

called hard copy. Generally, there are

two types of printers: laser and ink

jet/desk jet. Wide varieties of printers

are available under these groups which

incorporate different capabilities,

features and price.

Page 13: Output Devices

Usually, laser printers are monochrome

(black and white), but colour laser

printers are also available. It is faster

than the ink jet printers and very

expensive, particularly if it has both

monochrome and colour printing

features. When you want to buy a

printer, your choice must start from

laser types.

Page 14: Output Devices

Though laser printer is expensive at first

purchase, but in the long run it handles

large volumes of printing with low

operating cost. On the other hand, ink jet

printer requires minimal initial

investment but has high operating cost.

Ink jet printer is a requirement if you are

into graphics and desktop publishing

business. HP, the leader in printer

industry, recently announced a new

printer which outranks the existing ones.

The new HP Laser Jet printer 1100

works by Plug and Play, it doesn't

need driver CD. It also saves 72% of

electric consumption by automatically

turning itself on and off.

Projector

It is a hardware device, with which an

image like a computer screen is

projected onto a flat screen. Image data

is sent to the video card, by the

computer which is then translated into a

video image and sent to the projector. A

projector is often used in meetings or to

make presentations, because they allow

for a large image to be shown, with

which the display is available for a large

audience.

Plotter

Plotters, like printers, create a hard copy

rendition of a digitally rendered design.

The design is sent to a plotter through a

graphics card and the image is created

using a pen. In simple words, plotters

basically draw an image using a series of

straight lines. This computer output

device is used with engineering

applications.
