In the 15th and 16th century Europe, there were no banks to put your money with. They saved their money at home. The only way they could keep their money was to put it in pots and jars. The jars were mostly made of hardened clay as metal was a costly item then and people could not afford to buy a metal jar. Introduction

To help pupils acquire these financial literacy concepts, the school has infused financial

literacy into the Children’s Market programme. Pupils learn to be aware and conscious of the

day-to-day decision making processes, apply moral reasoning, make responsible decisions

and demonstrate integrity to stand by moral principles and shared values.

Throughout this experiential learning journey, you will also learn about the values of

teamwork, the importance of good interpersonal and communication skills. It is also the aim of

this programme to foster an entrepreneurial mindset in you so that you will learn about being

resourceful, consider taking calculated risks, and being resilient and ultimately, being socially

responsible in managing money and resources.

In addition, through the sales of the items at our Children’s Market, you are helping to save

the earth by reusing the same item either for the same function or another. Industries today

expend effort to match needs with waste. The implementation of this strategy has contributed

to substantial reductions in waste and disposal costs. The Children’s market creates

awareness of this strategy of reusing unwanted or trash bound items. This would reduce

landfill, and its consequential adverse environmental effects. This flea market contributes,

albeit, in a small contribution, towards social sustainability. It is a fun and enjoyable medium of

giving a fresh lease of life to unwanted items at, usually, a very low cost. As the saying goes

“One person’s trash is another person’s treasure!”

Your participation in “reusing” or “recycling” used items helps save the environment and your

money.

Mr Andy Ong took his family’s experience in the oral and dental care industry to

create Pearlie White. It is the Singapore’s first oral care brand. The brand pride

themselves on their strong family heritage dated back to 1869. Mr Andy Ong believes in creativity and simplicity. He said that big company in

Singapore is seen as big business. However it is still seen as a small business

if we have to compare it against the global scale of business. Entrepreneurs

have to be creative to differentiate the offerings from larger global competitors.

At the same time, the entrepreneurs also have to keep their implementation

simple so that they can respond to changes quickly.

Mr Richard Eu

Mr Richard Eu, group CEO of Eu Yan Sang,  the fourth generation in the family business. Eu Yan Sang was set up by his great-grandfather in 1879. Mr Richard Eu wanted to improve how things are traditionally done and make an impact. When he took over in 1996, the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) company had only one outlet each in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. 

History of Eu Yan Sang: In 1873, founder Eu Kong left his hometown of Foshan in Guangdong, Southern China to seek his fortune in Malaya. Determined to free tin mine coolies from the clutches of opium’s suffering by dispensing quality Chinese medicine and herbs, Eu Kong set up our first shop in 1879 in Gopeng, Perak. This shop was named ‘Yan Sang’, which literally means ‘caring for mankind’ in Chinese.

Eu Kong’s only son, Eu Tong Sen grew up dedicating himself to the family business and to realising his father’s goal. With determination and astute foresight, Eu Tong Sen established himself in Malaya and Singapore, and became a leading figure in tin mining and rubber plantation businesses by 1920s. Wherever he starts his tin mines, Eu Tong Sen would set up a medical shop to take care of his workers’ health and wellbeing.  As he expands the medical shop beyond Gopeng, he decided to brand the medical business more firmly with the attachment of the family name, and his medical shops were named as Eu Yan Sang since then.

Go Green – What you can do

Did you know that in 2011, each Singaporean generated 1,130kg of waste, resulting in almost

seven million tonnes of waste? (7 million tonnes of waste is equivalent to the weight of about

12,500 A380 planes!) And the waste we generated went up by 48 per cent since 2000. By

today, most of us have realized the inconvenient truth – that we are doing more harm to our

environment. We have often heard about the 3Rs – reduce, reuse, recycle.

These are some practical and cool ways to help you reduce, reuse, recycle and in turn, save

the environment. There are also 2 more Rs we should do:

1. ReuseReusing is one of the most practical ways to save the Earth. Besides, this method can also

save you lots of money! Remember the old square shaped discs that were commonplace ten

years ago? Floppy disks make stylish accessories if you reuse them, and the geek chic and

retro factor is a huge plus. Use them as coasters or fashion them into pen holders!

2. ReduceIn this world of consumerism, we generate a large carbon footprint just by going about our

everyday lives. Food containers, gas for transport and even small things like turning on the

computer for hours harms the Earth. Although this is inevitable, we can patronize companies

that have eco-friendly initiatives, so we can ease the strain on our collective conscience when

we consume.

3. RecycleRecycling usually conjures up ideas of huge factories and machines built to process waste

into usable products. While this is true, recycling need not be a boring idea. In fact, one of the

new trends in recycling is sustainable fashion products for the ultra-trendy fashionista with a

green outlook.

A super cool bottle top clutch

Two good examples are Starbucks and Apple. Starbucks uses cups that are made of

recyclable materials, and even encourages customers to bring their own cups in exchange for

a small discount. Also, the furniture in some of their stores is made from objects such as

reclaimed railroad sleepers. Apple, on the other hand, makes an effort to reduce unnecessary

packaging, and have been striving to make their machines more power-efficient, to leave a

smaller carbon footprint.

4. Refuse

Refuse is the fourth of the 5Rs. By buying biodegradable and environmental friendly products,

we can help reduce the amount of waste we produce. Biodegradable products will

decompose naturally over short periods of time. They will turn back into natural substances.

Unlike plastic, they don't take hundreds or thousands of years to decompose. All of these

translate into less waste, and a better outcome for the environment.

5. Repair

Repair instead of replacing your resources. Try to be resourceful by not buying a new one.

Instead, you repair it and make it useful again. A pencil case with a spoilt zip should not be

thrown away. In fact it can be repaired and reused.

Online shopping is the act of purchasing goods or services over the internet. It has been gaining popularity over the years. Although it can be very convenient to purchase products online, one has to be very cautious when shopping online.

Risks involved with online shopping

Online scams - Some websites might not besafe. Do not use a public computer for internet shopping as there might be tracking devices to steal your information. Use only secured payment gateways

Counterfeit (fake) products – You might never know if a product is original or fake until you receive the product. If the price of a product is too good to be true, it could probably be a fake product. So, you should compare and cross check with other websites for the price range.

Fake online reviews – remember not everything online is true. There could be chances for authors to pay users to post good reviews about them.

Not all the information is revealed – There could be hidden charges that are not revealed until the last stage. Eg. It could say free shipping but only when making the final payment, it reveals that free shipping is only for members or a minimum purchase.

These are useful tools for online purchasing.

Debit cards With a debit card, your money will be deducted automatically

from your bank account balance. You can apply for a debit card when you are 16 years old. You can use debit cards to make online purchases.

Credit cards A credit card is a payment tool and should not be used as a

borrowing tool. It may be a convenient mode of payment as it allows you to buy goods and services without using cash, but it is not intended to be a credit facility.

Always pay the balance in full by the due date. If you delay payment, you have to pay much more than what you have used.

Credit card interest rate is charged at more than 2% per month or 24% per year!!!

For throwing/kicking games:

a. There should not be sharp objects involved in stalls with throwing/ kicking games.

b. Pupils wearing spectacles should be extra vigilant of flying objects (e.g. balls) if they are manning game stalls with throwing games.

c. Where necessary, there should be barricades to prevent objects from flying around.

For game stalls involving water:

a. Pupils should try to contain the water spillage within their stalls.

b. Pupils manning the stall should be careful and mindful as the floor might be slippery.

c. Pupils manning the stalls should bring extra clothing and towels.
