Backups.

How, what, where, and when.

Backups should be scheduled and verified for integrity. A policy should also be in place for how long backups are kept.

Check disk.

Find and and fix problems earlier.

As hard disks age, problems can occur. Regularly scheduled check disk scans can find (and sometimes even fix) these before they become a problem.

Defragmentation.Improve disk efficiency and performance.

Defragmentation can reduce seek times, improving overall system performance and efficiency.

Windows updates.Use Microsoft to keep systems running well.

An updated operating system can reduce the opportunity for exploitation.

Driver and firmware updates.Improve functionality and reduce threats.

Manufactures release updates on a regular basis; these updates can reduce threat vectors and add additional functionality.

Antivirus updates.Non-updated antivirus software: marginal at best.

New threats are being developed on a regular basis; therefore, security must be kept current.

– Patch.» A patch is an update to an operating system or

application.» Patches are used to fix problems or reduce

security threats.

– Patch management.» All systems and applications should be as current

as possible.» Patches can fix problems, but they can also create

problems.» When possible, test a patch before deploying in a

production setting.» Before deploying a patch, make a backup of the

system.» Test the system after deploying a patch.

Summary

Certain maintenance procedures need policies to ensure best practices. Preventative maintenance activities such as backups, check disk scans, disk defragmentation, Windows updates, driver and firmware updates, antivirus updates, and patch management should all employ best practices.
