Introduction

The term EST (English for science and Technology) was given by R.S. Sharma in his research work.

Global language Largely accepted in every field and also

accepted as the “language of science and technology”

But in India, it is a second language

Page 3: Paper- 12, English Language Teaching (ELT-1)

EST(English for Science and Technology) is sub branch of EAP (English for Academic Purpose)

What is Science and Technology

Science is a systematic enterprise that builds and organize knowledge in the form of testable

explanations and predictions about the world.

Technology is the making, usage and knowledge of tools, techniques, crafts, systems or methods of

organization in order to solve the problem.

What is EST ?• Teaching of EST in India suffers from some serious

drawbacks.• Course & methods are unrelated to the specific

academic and professional needs of the science student.• In1977, it was realized that the problems of English for

special purpose were largely unrecognized this country.• As learner and feature of technical English taken

together will enable us to outline clearly the materials and methods use in science and technical student.

• EST is necessary in IITs, Engineering or Agriculture students in role, processes and context of major subject matter of which area and teaching method.

What is Needs of EST in India ?

• R.S. Sharma has focused on the “needs of student” specially in India.

• Treated as a “Needs” rather than Knowledge – in India

• Basic needs is an ability together scientific knowledge found in text-books and scientific journals & research of English language

• EST requires advanced vocabulary and good material

Continue……

• Science & tech. has a different language• There is vast difference between technical English

language and normal English:• For e.g.:

1) Reading and comprehension of technical texts written in English

2) Most of the teaching materials in the form of video & computer software is being produced in English as standard spoken English

Page 9: Paper- 12, English Language Teaching (ELT-1)

• Other need is to be able to communicate in classroom, laboratory, college and in university he/she needs English language communicate.

• There are two abilities of the student of science and tech. in India:

1) Reading and comprehension2)Able to speak English properly

conclusion

• R.S. Sharma has studied the needs of EST which is important to teaching English as science and technical student.

• And how English has technical language use in different fields.

• And it is also requirements and needs of the student as well as organization and for that need analysis is necessary.
