AnalysisOGulliver begins the story of his

journey in the typical pattern of the travel narratives of that era.

OBy setting up the narrator as a normal person Swift helps readers to relate to him as Gulliver is a trustworthy and a regular guy.

O It is obvious that these beings – Lilliputians are Swift’s imagination because this kind is impossible to exist in real world.

OWhen Swift wrote this novel, England was the most powerful nation in the world, with wide fleet of ships that searching for new places to take control.

ODuring this the English men came to know about many different civilizations.

OBut Swift chooses to set the first culture that Gulliver comes into contact is as far as too small to be real.

O At the same time, it is apparent that even though Gulliver fears the tiny arrows of the Lilliputians, he could easily escape from there if he put his mind to it. Why did he choose to stay?

O Might possible that he is curious about the Lilliputians, their culture, language, and ways of living.

O Gulliver's curiosity for knowledge were established in the first few paragraphs of the novel.

O Or because Gulliver enjoys the power that comes with being a giant - even as a prisoner in Lilliput, Gulliver is the most powerful being on the island.
