Paragraph Summary

Description and definition:Paragraph summery questions are a favorite

in MBA entrance exam. They usually comprise a given paragraph which may vary in size from 150 to 600 words. These questions are a unique blend of ‘Critical Reasoning’ and ‘Reading Comprehension’ and therefore certain skills need to be developed to successfully answer them. These skills once mastered will make answering paragraph summary questions very easy.

The four basic skills required to attain proficiency in answering Paragraph Summary questions are:

1. Understanding complex ideas2. Linking the key ideas into logical sub – units.3. Eliminating irrelevant information.4. Identifying the most crisp and relevant option.Once these basic skills have been mastered, answering the

toughest paragraph summary questions becomes relatively simple.

5. Understanding complex ideas:Students are tested on paragraphs and topics they

are unfamiliar with and are required to understand the idea behind the paragraph. Solve these questions as you would solve an RC passage. Along with a rapid reading pace, pick out the key ideas and essential points from the paragraph.

2. Linking the key ideas into logical sub – units:Once the key points of the paragraph have been

identified, the next step is to bind these ideas into logical sub – units taking care to follow the same chronology as the paragraph.

3. Eliminating irrelevant information:In order to confuse the test – taker, some of

the options may contain information that has no relevance to the given paragraph. Such options need to be identified and eliminated. Thus, the options that have repetitions, quotes and other information that is not relevant to the theme of the given paragraph need to be weeded out.

4. Identifying the most crisp and relevant option:Once the options containing irrelevant

information have been successfully eliminated, there may still be two or more options left which have all the key points and also follow the logical flow of the paragraph. At this juncture, the option that is the most concise and grammatically correct, is to be chosen instead of the most verbose ones.
