Talk With Your Child
Tell family stories about yourself,
your child’s grandparents, and about other family
history
Ask lots of questions so your child knows you are interested in what
he or she is interested in or thinking about – Then provide a good listening model by showing
interest in and responding to what your child contributes
Play rhyming and riddle games, and
board games(I spy; 20 questions;
Down by the Bay; Scrabble, Cards, etc.,)
Encourage your child to tell you about their day. Ask specific questions about specific parts of
the day
Talk about the purposes for doing the things you do
(e.g., I make a grocery list so I don’t forget anything; I read the paper to know what is
going on in the world)
Encourage your child to express and justify opinions , develop
logical arguments and give reasons for their decisions and choices

Visit The Bookstore
Take the time to go to the bookstore, find out the kinds of authors and genres your child likes, take time to browse!
Graphic Novels Are Very Popular
Read Stories In Your LanguageGive your child the gift of language –share stories in your home language –encouraging your child to read and understand stories in their first language –truly a gift that will serve them well in life!

Take Pictures of Experiences
Children love to use technology and using a camera will allow them to record their adventures and later record thoughts and feelings about their experiences.
Go To The Movies
Ask “Why” Questions!It is very important to ask questions that are meaningful – try to move away from “rote” type of questions such as Who, Where, When and move towards asking Why and How Might. This will help students build connections and inferring skills.
Model ReadingIt is important for your children to see you reading . Remember reading means more than just reading books!
