ReseaRch

The Centre for Entrepreneurship, Enterprise and Governance (CEEG)The Centre for Entrepreneurship, Enterprise and Governance (CEEG) is a research centre based at The University of Northampton. The centre has over 20 research active staff and generates very considerable income through the work of the Funded Project Unit, whose activities are aligned with the centre. Current projects include 3E and Corby Enterprise Ecologies which between them are worth more than £2m.

CEEG projects have a high impact on both policy and practice in the UK and abroad. The work of Prof. Nada Kakabadse, in addition to being extensively published, has directly influenced government policy on corporate governance in the UK, India, and Russia. The work of Prof. Richard Sanders has influenced Chinese government policy towards the management and funding of rural business development. The award winning work of Prof. Simon Denny has significantly influenced regional and sub-regional support for new entrepreneurs and has a national impact on the development of the social enterprise movement.

The centre’s research students benefit from being part of a vibrant, well funded, and high impact research culture and are able to work closely with academic staff on a wide range of developmental activities, as well as on their PhD projects. All CEEG research students are expected to present at conferences and submit articles for publication in peer reviewed journals during their studies. Recent development opportunities also include being part of an editorial board for an electronic journal and writing ‘debate’ pieces for the Institute of Small Business and Entrepreneurship. CEEG research

students also benefit from discipline based training designed to enable them to be competent in the business and management arena.

CEEG holds a formal research day three times a year, and organises at least one conference a year. Research students present their work at these events, including transfer presentations, thus enabling them to present to a large, informed and supportively critical audience.

CEEG has international partners in China (Shaoguan and Beijing), Sweden, Australia, and the USA. Academic staff from our overseas partners both present at our conferences and support some of our research students.

The centre also has extensive UK contacts and networks. We work with members of the UK Advisory group on corporate governance, and the EU, delivering very large scale research and knowledge transfer projects. We also work with the European Academy of Business and Society (EABIS), the IEASA Business Ethics network, the British Academy of Management, and the Academy of International Business as well as with Institutes of Directors in the UK, India, Australia, Russia and South Africa.

We are delighted with our new partnership with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, set up in 2010. From 2011 the centre will include the China, Transitional and Developing Economies Group.

“I currently run my own business, providing accountancy, taxation and consultancy services to self employed entrepreneurs and private limited companies.

As I live in London I chose to study as a distance learner. I was initially apprehensive about distance learning but as soon as I got online that feeling disappeared, I felt fully engaged with the University. There were always people available to help.

The BA (Hons) International Accounting course was ideal for me as many of my clients work in the international market. The course focuses on international trade, risk issues, investment and finance, as well as how to manage the finances of a multinational organisation. This course allowed me to grow and expand, along with my customers.

Although the course could be challenging I enjoyed every moment of it as my new found skills were useful both professionally and personally. I am so glad that I challenged myself as it’s really helped my business.

It is never too late and you can never be too old to embark on study – better late than never! The distance learning course at Northampton Business School has been fantastic. If I am asked where the best place is to study I always say Northampton Business School, your life will be transformed.”

Claire Young Apprentice 2008 finalist and business woman

The University of Northampton’s Business School was delighted to host a guest lecture by Apprentice 2008 finalist and business woman Claire Young. Claire addressed an audience of Northampton Business School students, staff and University Alumni about her career, how to start your own business and what it was like to be in the boardroom with Sir Alan Sugar!

Claire, who runs her business Elegant Venues from Northamptonshire, commented:

‘’Since starting a business in Daventry, I have been keen to get involved in the local Northants community, so I was delighted when the University contacted me to visit and talk to the students at Northampton Business School. After thoroughly enjoying my university experience, I find it refreshing to take a couple of hours out of the ‘business world’ to step back into education and appreciate the grounding it gave me. I work with universities across the country on a regular basis and the quality of Northants students I met during the event really stood out - they were articulate, proactive and passionate - I have no doubt they will go on to succeed!’’

Sir Bobby CharltonPatron of the China & Transitional Economies Research Centre

Footballing legend Sir Bobby Charlton gave The University of Northampton a glowing endorsement following his installation as Patron of the University’s China Centre. Sir Bobby has an unrivalled international reputation as a footballer and is well known and much respected in China where he has travelled on many occasions in a sporting and business capacity. Sir Bobby said:

“I’m delighted to take on the position of patron of The University of Northampton China Centre.”

Allan Fraser RushGlobal Planning DirectorLowe Brindfors

“I am completely delighted that The University of Northampton have the faith in me to make me a visiting Professor”.

“The simple reason for me involving myself more with the academic programme at Northampton Business School is to bring to the students a little of the real world. NBS does a great job in teaching the theoretical base of the discipline and trys to bring as much of the real world into the courses as possible, but the reality is that it is different out in ‘Agency land’. We use our own phraseology, we have our own processes and potentially for a young graduate entering our business, can be quite terrifying. Without the programme we have in place students could only imagine what life was like in an agency. What we have done is shown them. Not only how we work, but how we think, the disciplines we cover and how we work with one another. All of which will better position them to have a great chance of securing the marketing role they want.”

“My employer encouraged me to enrol on a course which would help me to develop both personally and professionally. The CIM Professional Certificate in Marketing was ideal for me as I felt it would give me a foundation from which to build on.

I was initially nervous about going back into education as it has been quite some time since I last studied but the tutors has been fantastic! They have been really encouraging and have made the transition back into study very easy. The calibre of the students on the course is very high. I have found that mixing with people from different industries incredibly valuable, it has enabled me to get a different perspective on marketing issues in different sectors and

understand how other businesses operate. It has also made me think differently about how I approach tasks and I am already putting into practice the theory I have learnt on the course so far.

My advice to those thinking of enrolling onto a course with Northampton Business School is just do it! You get so much out of it.”

“My line manager was the one who originally suggested the distance learning MSc IT Service Management (ITSM) course to me after hearing about the University of Northampton.

Based in Rome and having to travel all over the world, I was initially worried that I would have to give up employment to study. However, as the course is delivered by distance learning it meant that all of the course materials were online so I could study wherever, and whenever, I was able.

Working in IT, this course was ideal as much of the content directly related to my job.

The course has enabled me to think in new ways and I now have a greater knowledge of the subject field and a more in-depth understanding. In fact, I have already implemented ideas gained from this course into my job. With so many on-going work projects this qualification has given me a structure, for how best to do things. It has enabled me to learn while I work.

Even at a distance, the lecturers are always on hand to help me, either via phone or email, and have allowed me some flexibility when needed. Between my full time job and studying, my time management skills have definitely been put to test!

Since starting the course I have visited the UK on a couple of occasions and have used the opportunity to sit in on a couple of the classes as well as meet up with the lecturers. It was nice to put a face to the name! I also met up with the Course Leader, Susan Bailey, at the itSMF conference this year and after discussing my dissertation with her, I now feel able , with the support of the IS team, to complete this major piece of work earlier than expected.

Gaining this qualification will really help me with my career prospects and I am already planning to progress onto a PhD once I’ve completed.

I have recommended the course and Northampton Business School at The University of Northampton to both friends and colleagues.”

“Having decided that full-time study wasn’t for me I was lucky enough to turn my holiday job at a business rescue and insolvency practice into a permanent one. Knowing that I wanted to progress in my career, my employer suggested that I continue my studies on a part-time basis.

I decided to study on the ACCA course to give myself a grounding in finance and business. I eventually want to become an Insolvency Practitioner and I believe that what I learn on this course will help me to achieve my long term goals.

Fitting part-time study around my job has been challenging but my employer has been very supportive both financially and with my work hours. Working in full time employment means that I can put what I learn at the University into practice straight away.

The lecturers here are fantastic. Most of them come from business backgrounds so they know what they’re talking about. They’ve been there and done it, which means they can give real-life examples. You learn so much from them without even realising it!

My experience here has been fantastic and I would not hesitate to recommend the University to others.”

Case study

“I decided to undertake the MSc Accounting and Finance qualification arising from a partnership agreement with my Professional Body, the Association of International Accountants (AIA).

I chose the distance learning method of study as it gave me an opportunity to study at a high level whilst continuing to operate my Accountancy Practice.

The Northampton Business School lecturers were very supportive and generous with their time and gave excellent advice and guidance, as well as being tolerant of my many requests! They took their time to be as attentive as they could be in order to assist me through periods of numerous competing time demands and, spells of writer’s block!

This course has helped me to formalise concepts and principles that probably I was aware of unconsciously but that have now been integrated by the MSc into a methodology which is professionally and personally useful. I have to say that my ego is delighted to add MSc Accounting and Finance to my business card and Firm’s letterhead.

Studying at Northampton Business School meant that I was able to commence my studies immediately and, that was the primary attraction for me. The course provided long term benefits which will provide me with a more profitable consultancy.”

The MSc is designed for ICSA graduates and aims to provide a means by which the continuing professional and personal needs of chartered secretaries may be met.

14

Course ContentThe MSc is designed to provide continuing professional development for qualified chartered secretaries. Specifically, it aims to extend competence gained via professional qualification with ICSA and to enhance the ability of students to think strategically about leadership and management. In particular the two modules ‘The Effective Manager’ and ‘Strategic Leadership’ take an in-depth look at leadership and management skills. This top-up course is available via distance learning worldwide and students are supported by online materials and tutor guidance.

Modules are concerned with the evaluation and development of skills appropriate for managing others. Effective managers have a range of different approaches to their work, a diverse set of personality traits, attributes, values and beliefs. These may underpin skills proficiency, but are not in themselves skills. A key purpose of these modules is to encourage students to develop a sense of self-awareness and of their own strengths and development needs as managers, colleagues and subordinates. The modules seek to build upon and improve a range of definable skills which are pivotal to effective management practice and successful leadership. More specialised skills which are of particular significance to effective people management will be enhanced and developed. The modules will introduce

some of the central theories and frameworks in leadership and enable you to apply these theories and frameworks to analyse and address real strategic problems. The key themes of these modules are: • Enhancingselfdevelopmentandthe development of others • Anunderstandingofbusiness environmental complexity (internal and external) • Keystrategicleadershipskills, competencies and capabilities, which also reinforce employability skills (e.g. self management, team-work, critical-thinking, problem- solving, communication) • Meetingethicalchallengesinherent in operating at the strategic level within multicultural contexts • Promotingsustainablecompetitive advantage • Leadingchangeandtransformation, whilst meeting the challenges of the information age

Case study

“I chose to study at Northampton Business School as my fellow students recommended it to me as one of the best business schools around. It’s also situated in a wonderful rural location but is still near to many major cities, including London. The lecturers really helped me to understand and master the module on Strategic Management. I enjoyed the fact that we were able to have our independence and autonomy in learning but always had the support of the lecturers when needed. As well as gaining my independence I’ve adopted a more reflective attitude towards learning as well as having a better eye for detail! My whole experience was very positive and I really enjoyed my time there.”

Course ContentThis is a part-time programme designed to meet the needs of senior or potential senior managers in all sectors of employment. All the evidence indicates that British managers increasingly need comprehensive professional education and development. The MBA (part-time) programme provides a major opportunity to help meet those needs for managers within the region.

The programme has been designed not only to give participants a thorough understanding of business and management processes, but also to enable them to develop their effectiveness as practising managers. It will create many opportunities for participants and their organisations to improve performance. As a postgraduate degree, this course is demanding both in terms of entry qualifications and the rigour and workload associated with the course; so will require commitment and dedication from participants. The method of teaching is participative, enabling students to contribute from their experience and abilities as well as learn from others in the group.

The MBA (part-time) enables participants to consider issues in an organisation wide or total business context. Skills in analysing business and organisational problems are emphasised, as is the ability to recognise and exploit opportunities. The development of strategies and plans for business or departmental improvement is a major theme. However, since such plans have limited use if the manager

lacks the ability to implement them, the problems - especially the human ones - of managing change are addressed.

Throughout the course interpersonal and communication skills are highlighted and developed, together with links between the course content to participants’ own job roles and workplaces. Such links are particularly evident in the assessment programme through the use of job based projects and assignments. The MBA (part-time) covers all the core elements of Accounting, Marketing and Human Resource Management that you would expect in a comprehensive management development programme. The fundamental aspect of strategy development is fully addressed in the Strategic Management module.

“Catherine was with Hotel Chocolat for one year and from the very beginning proved to be a very valuable asset to the team. The Buying and Merchandising team was looking for someone who could “hit the ground running”, understand the Hotel Chocolat brand and be able to take on tasks and run with them, with very little direction from the Buyers. Catherine managed to achieve all of this very effectively. Part of Catherine’s role was to work on the development of the seasonal recipes that appear on the Hotel Chocolat website.

This was something that really challenged Catherine but she researched and subsequently made some amazing recipes that proved to be very popular on the website. Catherine also cooked a “banquet” with our Head Chocolatier for some members of the team which was also a huge success.

Having a placement student working in the department has proved to work really well. We get a fresh set of eyes every year to bring new ideas and creativity.”

Corporate

One of the ways we make the connection between work and study is by offering students the opportunity to undertake a one year period of work based learning during the third year of their studies. These students join a wide variety of organisations from large blue chip companies to SMEs. They find employment in the public, private and voluntary sectors, mainly in the UK but also internationally.

As full time employees, they are available for work from June/July at the end of their second year of study through to the September of the following year when they rejoin their full time studies and complete the fourth and final year of their degree.

Whether you are a small, medium or large organisation, we have students who are keen to work hard, contribute, develop new skills and bring fresh ideas and concepts into your business.

This is an important and significant experience for the students as their performance, development and learning is assessed throughout the year and this assessment contributes to their final degree classification – a very compelling reason to be a first class employee, produce quality work and impress their employer!

Supported by the University

During their period of employment, the student and employer have the support of a University of Northampton Visiting Tutor who will visit on two occasions during the year. We also ask that someone working closely with the student (usually their line manager) acts as our ‘link person’ (the Host Supervisor). This individual will meet with the Visiting Tutor during the two visits and give feedback on the students performance and progress - no lengthy and time consuming reports required.

Students are employed and salaried by their placement organisation in the same manner as any other temporary employee using the organisations normal terms and conditions.

“Working in a HR function I wanted to find a course which would help me progress in my career as well as offering a flexible approach to study. After searching online I decided to enrol on the part-time Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management at The University of Northampton. The part-time course offered me the flexibility I needed as well as covering all the elements of HR that are important to my career.

The lecturers are insightful, technically sound in their subject and enjoyable to listen to. They’re not just reading off slides! I also enjoy listening to the experiences that my classmates bring to the table. The campus is great, offering good resources and support.

I have the full backing of my employer who is supporting my studies, not only financially but also through professional development support.

Once I have successfully completed my Postgraduate qualification I will then have the opportunity to top up to a Masters. The skills I gain will help me to progress in my career and fulfil my ambition of becoming a HR Director or business owner.

I would recommend Northampton Business School to others as the tutors are great and the course content is both challenging and useful.”
