Three compounding factors are changing our lives: by the year 2050, the global population will have risen from six to nine billion; the average temperature will have risen by between 2 and 6 °C; and, without a technological breakthrough, depletion of oil and gas will have brought an end to cheap energy. Buildings and transportation make up more than half of carbon emissions, so finding practical solutions to this global catastrophe through smart development is essential.

Poundbury, the urban extension to dorchester, england, is recognized worldwide as one of the most advanced solutions to urban settlement in the twenty-first century. it is used by the uk government as a model for new development and enhancing rural economies.

The Poundbury Series, launched in 2007, is an annual series of seven lectures and tours which are an essential experience for those involved in the planning, design and building of housing developments in the uk and beyond. Those involved in the development of Poundbury will demonstrate through a series of lectures, workshops and visits how to implement these cutting-edge ideas. The underlying principles, established by the masterplanner, léon krier, and put into practise by the duchy of cornwall, will be analysed to help improve popular and specialist understanding of the place.

as the government and development industry search for an appropriate model for sustainable development in the twenty-first century, the Poundbury Series offers the opportunity to reflect on a model initiated by The Prince of wales twenty years ago which continues to gain credibility, not only in the uk but around the world.

The Poundbury SerieS 2009 The convenient remedy

Poundbury was designed for the Prince of Wales by the masterplanner Léon Krier, and is being developed by the Duchy of Cornwall. The Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment makes use of Poundbury as a platform for teaching and learning.

explore the essential ingredients needed to structure settlements which produce sustainable, mixed-use communities appropriate to an era of rapid climate change and increasing urbanisation.

Speakers will discuss the background to the development of Poundbury and explore the reasons behind its widespread attraction to developers, planners, politicians and housing providers. it will be a particularly helpful event for those wanting to gain a birds-eye perspective on how to piece together the many layers of information required to form a masterplan for sustainable, low-carbon, community building for the long term.

The significance of learning from historical settlements and applying it to future non-car dependent and self-sufficient communities was pioneered by léon krier more than twenty years ago. his research in this area and work for The Prince of wales was carried out at the time against much opposition, but is now becoming recognized as an essential tool in understanding why we got it so badly wrong in the twentieth century and how we can do better in the twenty-first.

find out how to create value for your development through the application of the timeless principles of sustainable urbanism.

This event will explore the financial implications of adopting a residentially-led, mixed-use design model and how value is added over and above that of a conventional development project. The relationship between private and affordable housing will be discussed together with the effect of creating a mixed-use environment which encourages both a successful local economy and social interaction.

Speakers will present the findings of the report Valuing Sustainable Urbanism published by The Prince’s foundation in July 2007. They will explore the implications this has for other developments in the uk and in particular how significant land owners, whether private or public, should be considering their long term strategy towards developing a sustainable future and increased portfolio value. new approaches to financing for the long term and enlightened equity ownership will also be discussed.

discover how Poundbury managed to break so many accepted highway rules, and yet achieve exemplar status.

This event will examine how the duchy of cornwall, their design team and west dorset district council together forged a new way forward for highway design in the uk in the early 1990s. Speaker david Taylor, partner at alan baxter, was instrumental in producing detailed designs based on european models of traditional urbanism—the basis of the Poundbury masterplan by léon krier. one of the keys to the success of the venture involved working from precedent that clearly worked in practise, rather than following regulations that had gone unquestioned for too long in the uk. how this information was gathered on location, assessed, and then turned into an acceptable code, will form part of this discussion. ian madgwick, Senior development liaison engineer (highways) at dorset county council, will share his long experience of the project. andy cameron, co-author of Manual for Streets, will discuss how new ways of managing risk in highways design have been applied to emerging exemplar projects.

discover how transport- or transit-oriented development and location efficiency can reduce the carbon footprint by encouraging connectivity and walkability.

Transit-oriented development becomes more significant as we seek to return to public transport and non-car dependent environments, if we are to achieve anything approaching sustainable settlements. while Poundbury is a settlement based on walkable neighbourhoods, there is still a way to go before the inhabitants abandon their cars for good. The transport strategy for new communities is a key component in reducing carbon emissions and producing healthier environments for all. This event will look at the latest ideas and built examples of how to successfully integrate tight, vibrant urban settings with efficient public transport to move around cities.

leading the debate will be hank dittmar, chief executive of The Prince’s foundation for the built environment, co-author and editor with gloria ohland of The New Transit Town (island Press).

explore what it means to build sustainably and reduce carbon footprints by using natural materials and systems rather than technologically complex, fossil-fuel based solutions.

with the pressure of climate change and the onset of oil depletion, what does it mean to build in a sustainable way, avoiding reliance on oil-based products, synthetic and toxic materials with high embodied energy? how should we deal with renewable energy supplies to new settlements? The development of the Code for Sustainable Homes, has pushed the sustainable agenda arguably towards a high-tech solution for low carbon building. This approach is in danger of being self defeating in the context of long-term sustainability.

The building research establishment (bre) have invited The Prince’s foundation to design and build a house on their innovation Park during 2009. This house will be presented, demonstrating the advantages of using a building model based on traditional construction and natural systems, rather than highly technological ones. This event will look at building construction, biodiversity, sustainable urban drainage— fully implemented at upton—renewable energy and the ecological principles which underpin our approach to building eco-towns.

look at the strategy behind the successful implementation of mixed uses to achieve a truly vibrant and sustainable community.

The programme will explore how to develop a successful local economy with a distinct character, based on the careful arrangement of end users, including housing, retail, social networks, small business and industry. in order to reduce car dependency and create a quality environment with all the health benefits from walking and cycling, it is essential that the daily needs of those living in the community are locally provided. developers often believe that such an approach is too complicated, thus playing into the discredited 1980s and 90s model of the out-of-town-superstore, car-dependent economy we have sadly come to accept as the norm.

at Poundbury, the free market and social objectives conjoin through the medium of careful use-planning. The delivery techniques will be presented.

explore how to produce architectural detailing which functions well, produces dignified architecture and creates a coherent language essential to good urbanism.

The Prince’s foundation is currently exploring sustainable construction through collaborative work with bre, using hempcrete, clay blocks and other naturally produced or grown materials. The seminar will describe how this research will offer a new direction to the building industry in the uk in its drive to become more sustainable. The process of an evolving tradition will be discussed, as consideration is given to what effect a new pallet of naturally produced or grown materials might have on traditional detailing.

we will also look at the role of historical precedent and local building types and how they can inform the planning of new settlements. by reflecting local identity in the detail, places are created that people enjoy and where time and weathering, rather than detracting, add to appeal and, ultimately, value.

President: HRH The Prince of Wales. The Prince’s Foundation, a company limited by guarantee, number 3579567; registered in England and Wales; registered office: 19-22 Charlotte Road, London EC2A 3SG; a registered charity, number 1069969; vAT number 839 8984 44.

the prince’s Foundation for the built Environment is an educational charity which exists to improve the quality of people’s lives by teaching and practising timeless and ecological ways of planning, designing and building.

We believe that if we can understand and apply time-tested principles, building once more in a sustainable way, we will reap improvements in public health, in livelier and safer streets and in a more affordable lifestyle for families and individuals. The Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment believes that building in a sustainable way will reap benefits for communities and result in neighbourhoods that accrue higher value over time.
