PHYSICAL EDUCATION DURING
DARK AGES
• After fall of Rome (476 A.D.) until 900 A.D.
• It belongs to a period of European History called The Middle Ages or Medieval Period (from about 500 A.D. to 1500 A.D.)
• A time during which a civilization undergoes a decline.
GENERAL HISTORY
WHY IT IS BEING CALLED AS “ DARK AGES”?• Because it brings images of war, destruction and
death.
WHAT HAPPENED DURING DARK AGES? Common people in Europe faced tough
times due to the formation and rising of
feudal system.Feudalism- a political system in Middle Ages in
which people worked and fought for nobles who gave
them protection and the use of the land in return.
Peasants worked the land and produced the goods that the lord and his manor needed. They were heavily taxed and were required to relinquish much of what they harvested.
Castles and walled cities designed by desperate people for protection.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION DURING DARK AGES
( Early Part)
• There was no need for “physical
education” in the middle ages because life
was a physical test just to live, people had
to work that required heavy physical
activities.
• St. Thomas Aquinas (1225–1274)
• Embraced physical fitness and recreation as positive for promoting social and moral well-being
• Said that intelligence depends in part on the physical fitness level of the individual
.
( LATER PART)
CHIVALRY AS PHYSICAL EDUCATION
• The only profession nobility had was war. Thus, physical education and sports prepared the young for the military. War, not peace was the normal way of life.
