Plastic Soup

Way out in the Pacific Ocean, a kind of marine soup whose main ingredient is floating plastic debris, has formed. It was discovered in 1997 by a Californian sailor, surfer, volunteer environmentalist and early-retired furniture restorer named Charles Moore, who was heading home with his crew from a sailing race in Hawaii, at the helm of a 50ft catamaran that he had built himself.

Toxische stoffen

Concentration of PCBs in beached plastic resin pellets, in nanograms per gram of pellet. Persistent, bio-accumulating and toxic substances (PBTs) have a range of chronic health effects, including endocrine disruption, mutagenicity and carcinogenicity.

De voedselketen

The plastic that accumulates in the oceans and seas finds an entry point into the food chain.

If, according to the latest estimates, circa 10% of the twilight zone fish have plastic ingested; we cannot rule out that these particles or the chemicals within them are passed on to predator animals such as seabirds, larger fishes and dolphins. The ecological linkages with the commercially important fish species are poorly known, but an impact on commercial fish is possible.

Main sources and movement pathways for plastic in the marine environment. Most plastic accumulates on beaches (1), in coastal waters and their sediments (2), and in the open ocean (3). Dark blue arrows depict wind-blown litter; grey arrows water-borne litter; orange arrows vertical movement through the water column, including burial in sediments; and black arrows ingestion by marine organisms. Emerging issues:

• Plastic Debris in the Ocean

• Phosphorus and Food Production

• Energing Perspectives on Forest Biodiversity

“Scientists are concerned that plastic debris in the ocean can transport toxic substances which may end up in the food chain, causing potential harm to ecosystem and human health.“

Ondernemen in afval/recycling

12-04-2012

Plastic Soup is een kans voor de afval/recycling sector:

• Preventie: meedenken met klanten over preventie

• Kunststof hergebruik en recycling doelstellingen gaan omhoog

• Grondstof prijzen gaan omhoog

• Opkomende markten missen kennis en ervaring
