What is a Podcast Anyway...?

A podcast is a series of digital media files (either audio or video) that are released episodically and downloaded through web syndication.

Technology has become a part of our every day lives whether we want to believe it or not. When was the last time your walked out of

your house without your cell? Better yet, when was the last time you searched the World Wide Web?

If you asked yourself those questions, like me, you probably can’t remember the last time your forgot your cell phone and you more

than likely searched the internet within the last 24 hours.

Because technology is continuously growing bigger and better, teachers , students and professors are starting to take advantage of

the technology they have at their fingertips by using podcasting in their classrooms and lectures.

Podcasting in the Classroom

In 2004 Duke University gave out 1,650 Apple iPods to its incoming freshman. The iPods were used academically for 16 courses in the fall and for 33 courses in the spring.Reports taken from Duke University after the first year of using the iPods for academic use are described in five different categories :

In the report one students stated, “I love being able to listen to the lectures at my convenience, to be able to listen to difficult portions several times, and just hear the material again- while working out, or running other errands-and I think the value of listening to the lectures showed through with a high score on the first exam (Flanagan & Calandra).

The Effectiveness of M-learning in the Form of Podcast Revision Lectures in Higher Education

• Before reading the article I had no idea what “m-learning” meant. After reading it, I found that m-learning is simply a shorter term for mobile learning in the form of podcasting.

After finishing a course in information and communication, a group of about 200 first-level students in the United Kingdom were given a series of revision podcasts in order to determine the effectives of m-learning.

As part of the process, students had to fill out an online questionnaire about their experience. The questionnaire consisted of a 5-point Likert scale comparing how they felt about lectures, podcasts, notes, textbooks and multimedia e-learning systems.

As a result, studies showed that podcasts are more effective than textbooks and notes.

Also, students stated they learned material better in the form of a podcast verses a traditional lecture or textbook.

Why Every School Should be Podcasting

This article had nothing but great things to say about podcasting. In fact, it’s so easy, elementary students are being taught how to use them. Eleven year old student, Chelsea Parkinson and her classmates at Oakington Manor Foundation School, stated that podcasting has been a “fun thing to do(Cole)”.

“Podcasting has transformed our

school,” says Oakington’s head of ICT,

Ophelia Vanderpuye. Kids are excited by it and it’s opened new ways of

communicating with others. Every school

should be podcasting(Cole).”

3 REASONS WHY SCHOOLS SHOULD BE PODCASTING:

Before this class, I had little experience with podcasting. I have listened to podcasts from other professors in the past but never had I ventured out to make my own until this class. I had a great experience producing my podcast and now realize the importance of podcasting. After doing my research on podcasting in education, it is evident that students, teachers, and professors all benefit from this great use of technology. As a student and pre-service teacher my plan is to continue working with podcasting and getting more familiar with all the aspects that go into making them so when I do become a teacher, I can be well prepared and use them in my classroom.

As a result of reading the three different articles, they definitely helped me get more of an understanding as to why teachers need to keep up with the changing times and new technology. All of the articles had nothing but positive things to say about podcasting and it shows through with students grades and student feedback in using this type of technology.
