CENSUS:

“Population census is the total process of collecting, compiling, analyzing or otherwise disseminating demo-graphic, economic and social data pertaining, at a specific time, of all persons in a country or a well defined part of a country.

As such, the Census provides a snapshot of the country’s population and housing at a given point of time.”

* A census is the procedure of systematically acquiring and recording information about the members of a given population. It is a regularly occurring and official count of a particular population. The term is used mostly in connection with national population and housing censuses

IMPORTANCE OF CENSUS

The census provides information on size, distribution and socio-economic, demographic and other characteristics of the country's population. The data collected through the census are used for administration, planning and policy making as well as management and evaluation of various programmes by the government, researchers, commercial and private enterprises, etc. .

National population register

The National Population Register (NPR) is a Register of usual residents of the country.

The 15th Indian census was conducted in two phases house listing and population enumeration. 

The database is maintained by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India

Features of NPR

All these provisions make it compulsory for the citizens ofIndia to register in the database.

The registration with NPR gives identity card which Commonly known as “Aadhar card.”

• As per Section 14A of the Citizenship Act 1955 as amended in 2004, it is compulsory for every citizen of the country to register in the National Register of Indian Citizens (NRIC). • The creation of the National Population Register (NPR) is the first Step towards preparation of the NRIC. Out of the universal dataset of residents, the subset of citizens would be derived after due verification of the citizenship status. Therefore, it is compulsory for all usual residents to register under the NPR.

The Census of India 2011 which started on 1st of April in 2010 is a historical landmark in Indian history.

This will be largest census in human history till date ever done by any government in the world.

Government of India will collect data from each and every household in the states and union territories of India.

The Census 2011 is the 15th National Census of India undertaken by the government after a gap of 10 years.

The major highlights of the Census 2011 (Provisional ) are as under:

*The population of India has increased by more than 181 millionduring the decade 2001-2011.*Percentage growth in 2001-2011 is 17.64; males 17.19 and females 18.12.

*2001-2011 is the first decade (with the exception of 1911-1921) which has actually added lesser population compared to the previous decade.

*Uttar Pradesh (199.5 million) is the most populous State in the country followed by Maharashtra with 112 million.

*Population (0-6 years) 2001-2011 registered minus (-)3.08 percent growth with minus (-)2.42 for males and -3.80 for females.

*Overall sex ratio at the national level has increased by 7 points to reach 940 at Census 2011 as against 933 in Census 2001. This is the highest sex ratio recorded since Census 1971 and a shade lower than 1961. Increase in sex ratio is observed in 29 States/UTs.

*Kerala with 1084 has the highest sex ratio followed by Puducherry with 1038, Daman & Diu has the lowest sex ratio of 618.
