Refresher on Imperialism Formal colony (India): establish occupation

government, rule by European origin men; control over domestic and foreign affairs

Protectorate (Egypt): indigenous ruler granted formal autonomy, but in fact supported by imperialist power.

Sphere of influence (China): preferred when rivalry prevents any one imperialist power from establishing colony or protectorate. Mandate

Open door (Latin America): preferred by powerful latecomers. Way to break down spheres of influence already established. Appeals to anti colonialist sentiments of indigenous. In fact more sophisticated means of control. Leads to domination
