Analysing Film Posters

Page 2: Poster analysis

This film poster uses dark colors in the

background to match with the title "black

swan.”

Natalie Portman is shown in light colours

indicating that she is the 'Light in the darkness'

The crack down her face may represent the

downfall/distruction of her 'good' side. Inside

that cracks it looks as though black feathers

are underneath (black swan). In her hair there

is a white feather, this could represent the

'pure' swan as white has connotations to

purity.

It looks as though the girl in the poster is

dancing, as her arm is in the air and she is

wearing what looks like the straps of a ballet

costume. This could give clues into the

relationship between Swan's and Ballet. (Swan

Lake) This will attract audiences interested in

Dance and theatre.

The use of Natile Portman, Vincent Cassel and

Mila Kunis's name draws attention to an

audience that may like to watch these

actor's/actresses in films.

Black Swan

Harry BrownMichael Caine is a well established british

actor plays the min character in the film

and therefore is displayed as the main

image of the film poster. This will then

attract fans who have seen previous films

starring him and also they would know

that he is a good actor so the film must be

also good.

Images in the background show anarchy

and carnage and give an indication of

what the film may involve.

The colouring is predominantly red which

would suggest blood and anger. It could

also suggest panic and lack of control.

The gun in his hand represents some

extent of authority and power that harry

brown has over the carnage in the

“shadow of him. It would appear that there

is little interference from police also. You

may assume that he has resorted to

becoming a criminal as he also stands

alone.

KidulthoodThe sort of clothing the protagonists wear in

the image would suggest that they are of a

lower working class.

Wearing tracksuits and baggy jeans is

stereotypical of a make who is in a gang.

One of the protagonists has a baseball bat in

their hand which would suggest criminal

activity and violence. His hood is up and he

looks like a stereotypical “thug”. This has

suggestions that he may be up to something

suspicious in the film.

This poster introduces multiple characters. you

are able to tell that they all will be playing a

significant role in the film. In the background of

the image you are able to tell that it is set in an

inner city environment and is very urban which

is a convention of a hood crime genre.

The over all colour scheme for this poster is

black and white which may suggest

connotations to darkness and it is usually

associated with bad things.

The Last song is a drama romance film which was released in the year

2010, it's about a rebellious young girl who is sent to the beach to stay

with her dad for the summer. Through the love of their music her dad

and her reconnect and the story thus develops from their and she finds

her lover too.

This is an establishing shot, on a beach this connotes the location

which she is staying in so it foreshadows the film for us as we will be

seeing the location again. The couple being their shows they are the

main characters, as they are in the whole frame and it connotes that

they are the protagonists. As the sun is setting, it connotes love, peace

and calmness. It therefore, suggests to the audience that this film is a

love story and is a soul full film. Having the wide-shot is powerful, as it

already sets the scene for the audience and we have an idea of the

location. And this is what the audience is being encouraged to look at

(gaze at) because it could connote a significant definition. This could in

fact be equilibrium and be the opening and ending of the film, so it

could be polysemic. Moreover, having a full wide-shot is beneficial as

we can see the couples body language, and by the way they are it

connotes how much they love each other and they have a big impact

on each others lives.

It is a high-key lighting which means that more filter lights are used.

And the effect in this image appears more realistic and might depict

either a sunny day or a more dimly lit scene. The major difference is

that, although shadows are still created, the contrast between light and

dark is much less pronounced. Having this sort of lighting makes the

characters and the background look more realistic and keeps

everything stabled. The typography is in bold and white so it stands out

and is in italics, which connotes peace, calm and love. Moreover, the

typography connotes a subtext, and it could be the last song which the

she may sing or could be death of someone so this keeps the audience

thinking what the definition is. And lets them be inclined towards the

definition and would draw them into watching the film as they would

want to know if its a literal meaning or just dramatic irony. The

audience which it may be targeted to is young teenagers, females or

young adults. As it's a love story and the fact that it stars Miley Cyrus

would probably make them watch it too, causing it to be

celebrity endorsement.

Eclipse

The darkness of the poster connotes

danger for the heroine. this shows that

there will be dark aspects in the film.

The background is like a cloudy atoms

which would bring in pathetic fallacy

where the background hints at the

mood. In this case it would be a very

gloomy eerie mood.

The main characters are at the front

which would suggest that they are the

most important characters in the film.

Having the girl in between two male

characters would suggest a love

triangle and especially with the tag line

“it all begins…with a choice” this

suggests a choice between the two

male characters.

Shank

The wide shot gives the audience

a better look at what they are

wearing, body language and

location.

Ghostly picture of the gang above

the main image which would

suggest these people are

possibly dead and then that

would raise questions of how

they have died.

Main characters in the middle. Possibly running to escape the gang culture

they may be caught up in.

The charters look scared in this picture which would suggest that there is

something bad coming after them. they then look like the victim.

The image suggests they are all of equal power because they are all the

same level. they are also all in one line.

The lighting is low key but does have some high key lighting also.
