AVEIRO Reasons to visit our town PORTUGAL “Salinas” The oldest activity of Aveiro, is the production of Salt. Take a stroll to the “Salinas” right outside the city. You will encounter small "mountains" of salt. Known as the Venice of Portugal, Aveiro is surrounded by salt-flats, beaches and lagoons and dominated by the Central Canal that crosses the town. There are several ways to discover Aveiro: on board of a typical “moliceiro” boat along the Ria waters, by BUGA (Aveiro free bikes) or simply on foot through the paths of Art Nouveau or of Contemporary Architecture. Of all the boats seen in the area, “Moliceiro” is the most elegant, being perfectly lined, painted with bright colours and often with ingenious and humorous decorations. “Moliceiros” The Art Nouveau Museum, located in Casa Major Pessoa, a true icon of art nouveau. New Art Museum When arriving in Aveiro by train, visitors are usually drawn to the train station's tile- adorned façade. From there it is about 1km (just over half a mile) to the Central Canal, walking down the main avenue, Avenida Dr. Lourenço Peixinho. Railway Station The Church of Saint Dominic, now “Sé Catedral de Aveiro”, was founded in 1423 and was rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries. It features examples of several religious architectural styles, namely mannerist (side chapels), baroque (high choir, vaults and cross) and modernist (transept and master chapel). “Sé Catedral” Located in the city centre, it is a beautiful building – it once was an important factory. It has very modern facilities where all type of events can be performed. “Centro Cultural e de Congressos” Sta Joana Museum The museum encloses collections of painting, sculpture, paramentaria, tile, goldsmithery, furniture and ceramics with particular incidence in the baroque period. It is the old Convent of Jesus. The University of Aveiro (UA) – High School founded in 1973 – soon became a reference due its research quality, the teaching staff and its modren facilities.
