MEETING IN GUADELOUPE MAY 2013

WITH OUR PARTENRS FROM BELGIUM ITALY AND GERMANY

It is always a real pleasure to host some visitors to our island because it’s a way for us to discover again all its amazing sites, to read again about it, to have new photos and enjoy all his natural beauties.

It’s also a real adventure for our pupils and teachers to share all these wonderful moments with our partners, teaching and telling about our country, practicing our English, dancing, singing together, asking questions about the European culture and education.

All these events help adults and children to remember that they belong to a huge educational community. Thanks to the European programs to give us this great opportunity.

MONDAY 20th MAY

After a delicious breakfast we went in the morning to the blue school in Saint- Claude to meet

Catherine and our new partners from Italy, Anita and Luigi. Together we went by car to Bouillante.

Christine was with us in the car to be our guide. We saw beautiful beaches, flowers and trees with

colourful blossoms.

Concerning to our project we came to know that France’s island territories and especially

Guadeloupe plays an important part in the renewable industry. These territories are

considered an integrated part of France, but for geographical reasons they cannot be

connected to the grid. The French Electricity Board (EDF) has always been keen to install

renewable energy sources in these places, where they are considered to be an alternative

to diesel generation. These places have proved a valuable training ground for the French

renewable industry.

Passing a small factory at the seaside we stopped to see a Geothermal plant, constructed and commissioned in 1986 by EDF. Located on the Basse-Terre island, the Bouillante geothermal plant is the only hightemperature geothermal plant in France. A 340-meter well at the foot of the Soufriere

volcano provides steam (20%) and 160o water(80%). In 1996, after several years of experimenting, the plant was connected to the electricity network. An availability rate of around 90% over the

first years makes this plant highly promising.

After this interesting stop we arrived at the beach and entered a glas bottom boat to watch fish on a

corall reef. It was amazing. We saw a lot of different fish and coralls. For a while the boat stopped

and we went scuba diving.

On the way back we enjoyed the sun and exotic juices. Our lunch at the seaside at L'Eddie' s

Papillon restaurant was delicious. We had wonderful fish. In the afternoon we went to the beach.

Some of us went scubadiving to watch turtoises swimming in the sea. Others stayed in the sun on

the beach, watching and enjoying the production of handmade icecream with exotic flavours. Back

in St. Claude we went in the evening to a small restaurant where we had a special kind of creolic

saussages und a lot of chilli con carne.

Afterwards we went very tired to bed. Thanks to our guide and hosts for a wonderful day!

MARDI 21th MAY

We had planned to climb la Soufrière but it was raining too much, so we decided to have a bath at « Bassin des Amours ».

Céline explained to the group the name of fruits and trees we can see on the path : breadfruit trees, mango trees ,plam trees, coconut trees,...

After a pleasant time in a water at 30 degrees, we had a pic-nic at the lighthouse, at Vieux Fort, which was in the past time a military place. It also gets a wonderful view on the islands « les Saintes » and it’s the point where the Ocean meets the Caribean sea.

In the afternoon, we went back to school to visit pupils and teachers.

After a welcoming time in the courtyard with songs and dances with all the classes, we followed the small grades in the cantine.

The youngest classes showed us their dictionnary and we tried to tell them all the words in our language : French, Dutch, German, Italian and English. They discovered the sounds of these words and tried to repeat them.

The grade CM1 presented all his work on global warming and its consequences on Guadeloupe. They also presented how they did to save energy in their daily life.

Pupils commentaries

“Nous avons fait un exposé sur le réchauffement climatique et ses impacts en Guadeloupe. Après l’exposé, ils nous ont demandé notre âge. La maîtresse a traduit en anglais et les partenaires ont dit que c’était super.”

The other class of CM1 presented the Rhum process at Bologne which is now known

as a clean factory.

Pupils commentaries

Grade CM2B explaining their presentation

WEDNESDAY 22nd May

En route for the beautiful and tiny island « les Saintes ». We visited the Fort Napoléon and then the coral reefs with a transparent kayak. We met 2 dolphins which were jumping between us. It was great.

Charter to reduce consumption of electricity or water can be plan at any time of the year. A comparison of the real reductions done by families, school and children will be checked at the end of 2014.

Every school can change the planning and do the activities at another period.

-Meetings 2013/2014 : Tarento at the end of October (during All Saints holiday) to discover the school.

-Anita tells us that her school has applied for another project and will probably have to run 2 Comenius projects at the same time.
