Introduction Turbo generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy.

The Mechanical motion is generated in turbine by using heat in the form of saturated steam.

It operates on the fundamental principles of ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUCTION.

Operation principle:

A EMF is induced in a conductor when it is cut by the magnetic flux is known as electromagnetic induction. E= N dφ/dt

TURBO GENERATOR Synchronous Generator

Definition:The generator which runs in a synchronous speed

corresponding to the no of pole and supply frequency

Parts:By Mechanical

StatorRotor

By electrical:Armature winding

The winding which carries only the load current.

Field windingThe winding which carries only the field current required

to produce the magnetic flux.

TURBO GENERATOR EXCITATION SYSTEM

Page 9: Ppt turbo generator

Excitation System• The process of generating a magnetic

field by means of an electric current is called excitation.

• It provides power to the field windings thus produce field for rotor.

Types of exciter:Brush type exciter / Static excitationBrush less exciter

Page 10: Ppt turbo generator

Brush Type/Static ExcitationRotor Field Winding is connected to Slip ring

mounted on Rotor. Excitation is provided by current transfer by

contact through Carbon Brushes, Slip ring and field lead.

Advantage Of Brush Less Exciter Over Brush Type Exciter

Eliminates Slip Rings, Brush gear and Field Breaker

Eliminates all problems associated with transfer of current via sliding contacts

Eliminates the Hazard of changing Brushes on Load

Brush Losses are eliminated
