PRELIMINARY EVALUATION SHEETQuality of Summary My honest evaluation- what

was done well and what was not of good standard? Try to cite specific example and moments from your video

Strategies put forward to make sure a high quality is maintained.

Quality of holding a shot steady

We had some problems with holding the camera steady because we did not have a tripod. However, considering we didn’t have a tripod we still managed to shoot our task on time, which is a good achievement.

We could’ve used a tripod in order to make sure the shot was steady. But since there was no tripod available at the time, we used our initiative and used a stack of books to place the camera on.

Quality of the framing shots I think the quality of the shots were generally very good but there were times where our actor’s head was cut off. However, if we did have a tripod we would’ve have been able to manoeuvre the camera smoothly.

We discussed and acted out our scenes before actually recording them in order to find out which angle worked best and we discussed the timing in order to make the film flow more easily.

Quality of shooting material appropriate to the task set- i.e. the content of your film pre and post editing was consistent with the exam directives

The exam directive for the preliminary task was to include a character walking through a door, conversation between the characters and reverse shots. We included all of that therefore we met the expectations of the task. However, I do acknowledge the unsteadiness of the camera some points, we can improve.

We edited the whole movie together after we finished filming. We all suggested different editing techniques in order to allow a smooth flow. Hannah actually handled the editing techniques but as a group we decided on whether it flowed well. Team work allowed us to create a fairly satisfactory preliminary task.

Quality of selecting mise-en-scène including colour, figure, lighting, objects and setting;

The suspect’s attire consisted of a black jacket with a hoody. This added to the common stereotype attached to young youths-that they are troublemakers. We used the “Exhibit A” bag to epitomize the police-like atmosphere.

I secured the location and we all adjusted the setting in order to make it seems like a proper police interview.

Quality of editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer

We used reverse shots in order to make sure the viewer knows that the focus is on the two characters on the screen. Also, we used the “overlap” editing technique at 0.26 seconds in order to allow a smooth transition to the next shot.

We referred to the specification for the preliminary task constantly in order to maintain a high standard of work. We also sat down and helped with the editing in order to discuss which techniques worked best.

Quality of using sound with images and editing appropriately for the task set;

During the whole task, we used diegetic sound in order to give the whole film a natural feel. The sound correlated with the image and editing appropriately, nothing was cut out. However, you can hear some static in the background but the dialogue is clear. Also, we could not edit out myself saying “action” because that would’ve cut out the beginning of Jemima’s line (the police officer). Next time, we need to carry on shooting for a few more seconds in order to include the full line without parts of it being cut off.

Again we referred to the specification in order to include reverse shots, dialogue and a character walking in through a door. We also re-shot some scenes in order to frame the shot better, make it sound better and to also make it easier when it came to editing.

Quality of positioning and movements of actors

The positioning and movement of actors was of a high standard. We had no problem in focusing on each character. However, we could’ve changed the positioning of camera as it sometimes cut Jemima’s head out of the shot.

We sometimes practiced movement and positioning before recording. For example, we focused the camera on Jemima or Leon in order to check if they were in the shot.

Quality of group planning, meeting targets, organization I think our group planning

was really good. We all discussed possible settings and we also contributed to the script. We were organized as we managed to secure a location, camera and script in time to film. However, I think we

We all sat down and discussed everything before actually shooting. I got all the groups numbers and each member was given a task to complete in time for filming. This shows good organization skills and good initiative.

should’ve met more in order to discuss which shots would be most effective in order to convey meaning.

Group dynamics i.e. how did your group work together We worked very well

together. Everyone listened to each other’s ideas and we also contributed our own ideas in order to make the film more enjoyable. We communicated really well and asked questions if we were unsure of anything. When I asked Leon to bring in the tape for the task, he remembered it. Also, Jemima wore smart clothes for the film as it was required of her to add to the atmosphere of the film. Also, Hannah offered to buy the gummy bears needed for the film. I thought of the location, got everyone’s e-mail addresses and phone numbers and printed off the scripts for them to learn their lines.

I sent everyone each other’s phone numbers in order to make sure we could communicate if we needed to. This shows organizational skills and preparation for any outcome. However, when it comes to shooting our real film, we should have group meeting more in order to voice our opinions on how the film is going and whether we need to make any more changes in order to improve the quality of it. But all in all, the group works well together mainly due to organizational skills, communication and good team work.

Other points of evaluation ( e.g. equipment related etc) For the preliminary task, we

did not have a tripod due to it not being available at the time. The next time we film, we shall make sure that tripods are available at any time.

We used our initiative and placed the camera on took of a stack of books in order to get keep the camera steady and to get Jemima in all of the shots.
