Pre-Master’s Program: why and for whom?

Pre-Master’s Program (transitional year)

• Meant for students who are not immediately admissible to the

Master’s Program

• Fulltime: 1 semester

• Part-time: 2 semesters

The Board of Admissions decides on admission on an individual basis.

Admission

You are admitted to the Master’s Program if:

• You have a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from Tilburg University

• You have a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy considered equivalent

to that of Tilburg University by the Board of Admissions

• You have completed the Philosophy Pre-Master’s Program

Admission

Admission to the Pre-Master’s Program is possible, if:

• You are in possession of a diploma of Higher Vocational Education in a

relevant Study Program

• You have a university Bachelor’s degree that does not allow immediate

admission to the corresponding Master’s Program (e.g. Economics,

Psychology, Law, Sociology)

Students of Higher Vocational Education admitted in previous years had taken

the following specializations:

-Art and Culture -Language and Communication

-Behaviour and Society -Law and Governance

-Economics and Business -Technology

-Education

Pre-Master’s Program

Pre-Master’s Program

There are three mastertracks:

• Ethiek van Bedrijf en Organisatie (EBO)

• Philosophy of Contemporary Challenges (PCC)

• Philosophy of Humanity and Culture (PHC)

Each track has a specific Premaster’s program

Pre-Master’s Program

• All programs are equivalent to 30 ECTS

• All programs have 2 starting times: September and February

• The courses involved are a selection of Bachelor’s courses

supplemented with Academic Skills assignments (e.g. Writing Skills)

• You will be taking most of the courses together with Bachelor’s students

• After finishing the Premaster’s Program you are admitted to the

Master’s Program

• Lectures usually take up 2 or 3 x 45 minutes.

• A course can consist of lectures and seminars

Semester system

• 14 weeks in which courses are given

• 2 weeks to catch up on courses

• 4 weeks in which exams are scheduled

6 ECTS course = 168 hours (incl. lectures)

• Fulltime about 40 hours a week (5 courses per week)

• Part-time about 20 to 25 hours a week (2 to 3 courses per week)

• Courses in the daytime as well as in the evenings

• Determine your own pace and contact your Academic Advisor about

your schedule (‘When to take which course’).

• If at all possible, courses given in the daytime in year 1 will be

scheduled in the evenings in year 2 (Monday and Thursday evenings).

• Some courses are not scheduled in the evenings.

• Please keep in mind that studying part-time means that you may also

have to take courses in the daytime.

• Although seminars are not required for part-timers, they are highly

recommended

Course Fee

The Course Fee to be paid (in addition to university tuition fees!)

depends on the number of ECTS.

The number of ECTS is specified in the Letter of Admission you

will receive from the Board of Examiners.

Courses taken outside of the required number of ECTS are not

included in the Course Fee and need to be paid separately

• Documents required:

• copy of your passport

• a short cv

• copy of relevant diplomas or certificates

• overview of successfully completed courses

• After your application it will take 2 to 6 weeks max. for the Board of

Examiners to let you know if you have been admitted to the

program

• If you have been admitted you still need to register

• After receiving your Letter of Admission you will receive a welcome

letter with more information on how to register.
