Therefore, it is necessary to understand and appreciate the role of human resources in the development of the economies of nations in the world

PHILIPPINE POPULATION IN TERMS OF SEX

According to the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) the Philippine population (as of May 1, 2000) consists of 76, 498, 735 people.

About 37.9 million are women ( 49.5 %)

and 38.6 million are men (50.5%)

THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN PHILIPPINE SOCIETY

About 48 percent of women 15 to 49 years old were engaged in gainful activities, and 52 percent in non-gainful activities

Among those women in gainful activities:

26.2 % were laborers and unskilled workers

14.1 % were professionals

13.5 % were farmers , forestry workers and fishermen

Among laborers and unskilled workers:

84.9 % were engaged in sales services

9.3 % were engaged in agricultural occupations

Among women in non-gainful activities, 67.7 % were housekeepers and 32 percent were students

PHILIPPINE POPULATION IN TERMS OF AGE

The Philippine Population is distributed as follows:

0-14 year olds are about 37%

15-59 year olds are about 57%

60 years and up are about 6%

IMPORTANT STATISTICS ON SENIOR CITIZENS

The elderly population grew at 4.39% during 1995-2000, higher than than the growth rate of 1990-1995.

Low vision was the common disability among senior citizens (54.11%). Others suffered from difficulty in hearing (9.7%) partial blindness(8.43%) partial deafness(6.43%) and total blindness(4.52%)

EMPLOYMENT/UNEMPLOYMENT RATE

LABOR FORCE – the number of people who can be gainfully employed.

According to the NSBC, the Philippine Labor Force is estimated to be 35.2 million ( as of January 2006)

Of the 35.2 million, about 32.4 million are EMPLOYED, resulting to a NATIONAL EMPLOYMENT RATE of 91.9 %

The TOTAL UNEMPLOYED PERSONS numbered about 2.8 million, resulting to an UNEMPLOYMENT RATE of 8.1 percent

LITERACY RATE

LITERACY –is the ability to read write

FUNCTIONAL LITERACY- is the ability to carry out common tasks such as doing simple computations and schoolwork or employment

The SIMPLE LITERACY RATE in the Philippines is at 92.3 percent (2000)

The FUNCTIONAL LITERACY RATE is at 84 percent ( 2003)

The Philippines have a large youth population which is about 40% of the entire population

Many senior citizens are still gainfully working, with many of them still head of households

There is still an 8 percent unemployment rate, and 7 million people are still underemployed, meaning they are not using their full capacities in their work
