Introduction
The Central Library of Pondicherry University was established in 1986. Then it was named as Ananda Rangapillai Library.
Library has been divided into 8 sections.
Various sections of library have been computerised by using LIBSYS Software.
MISSION: To support and supplement learning, teaching and research programmes.

Acquisition Section
• Acquiring and accessioning collections is the main responsibility of acquisition section.
• Acquiring, processing and accessioning of text books, reference books, CD’s, theses etc.

Circulation Section
Books are issued on loan and received back in this counter.
Issuing books, receiving books, giving overdue charge slips, sending overdue notices to the departments, issuing Barcode Membership Identity Card are the major activities of this section.

Functioning of Circulation Section
Member are requested to bring their Barcode Membership Identity Card whenever they visit the library.
The membership of the library is open to the following categories:

Periodical Section
Periodical section process in the Journals (National and International Journals, Newpapers, Magazines.
These jounals, on completion of their volumes are separated for binding to make Back-Volumes.
Periodical section are provided with air conditioned reading hall. The hall is facilitated with more than 30 computers available.
Functioning of Periodical Section
This section new journals at the starting of new academic year.
The titles are checked in the catalogue to avoid duplication.
Records Maintained:
• Payment register
• Watch register
• Invoices with price proofs
Technical Section
• Classification and Cataloguing are the two sub sections of technical section.
• The assigning Call Number are the activities performed by this section.
“ Class number+Book number= Call number”
• 1 Assistant librarian and 1 Professional Assistant are holding the responsibilities of this section.
Functioning of Technical Section
Classification used for DDC 22ed.
Catalogue used for AACR2, MARC 21.
Information Technology Section
Computer based Library Services in the section in other sections are provided from this section.
Document Delivery Service is also provided by this section.
Maintaining Library Database, Generating Bar-Coded Identity Cards, Barcode Labels for books,etc.,

Impact of Internship
During the Internship period, I learnt the practical aspects of working in library.
In each section, staff explained about the university library system. They guided and assigned me some works.
