Capable of virtualization to run multiplesystems and take advantage of better use
of CPU cycles and storage

Massive clusters of low cost
commodity computers

- Compute cloud (e.g. Amazon
Elastic Cloud)- Data cloud (e.g. Amazon S3)

- Public cloud- Private cloud

Private cloud: specifications

Entire software stack is open source

Management of the cloud must be via easy to use interfaces, and there should not be excessive systems administration costs

Compute and storage systems must be fully scalable by adding additional elements

There should be a capabilty to cost and charge for hosted virtualized systems

Building our ecosystem

Identify key support people

Where necessary, send them for training and collaboration buildinge.g. Univ North Carolina (iRODS)

e.g. Sun Microsystems (Cloud)

e.g. DuraSpace (Fedora)

Collaboration with hardware vendor to innovate together

Current status

High level design complete

Teleconference with engineer and others from Sun microsystems to determine feasibility

Compiling budgets

Will hold a planning meeting with Sun soon

Plan to have in place by mid-November
