DRAFT 2 Episode Two
Quick recap of first episode ‘how youths violence and gangs are represent-ed through TV and film’
Fast video clips
Title‘How youths are represented through poverty and wealth’
Live archival footage of youths( poor and wealthy) saying what they do with their time instrumental of fast beat song- Giggs- ‘talkin your hardest’Text comes up ‘ less fortunate youths are usually seen to be hanging around parks and estates’Vioce over saying while text is on screen
Montage of images of Peckham, Brixton, elephant castle, Acton estates - youths in estates , London riots
vs.Montage of wealthy youths- playing piano, singing, in lessons ( classical music plays here) , shopping for clothes vs. London riots stealing from shops.
Vioceover‘ this is a clear portrayal of youths in the media who are poor, it seems to be that youths do conform to these stereotypes and the riots is a clear portrayal of that’
Statistics
Moving graph of th level of school pass from 2000- 2011 within youths in poverty
How many wealthy youth pass school – usual grades they get
Crime rates within poor youths-( they have nothing to do and so turn to crime
Images of Primark, Harlesden, church road,
Iceland, Bardo then images of oxford street- Selfridges, top shop, ESPIRIT, Gucci
and Hyde park
Interview- Brixton Ask youths- lower class
1. Where would your mum shop for food Iceland or Waitrose
2. What about clothes? Would you rather Primark or top shop or Selfridges?
3. How much allounance do you get a month
Interview- Chelsea and
FulhamAsk youths- middle/upper
class
4. Would you ever shop in primary for clothes?
5. Where do you shop for food? And why?
6. How much allowance do you get a month
outside elephant and castle high street
‘ from this we can see that lower class youths usually...... And middle/upper class usually... (depends on results we get)
‘ there is a chavy portrayal of lower class youths in the media such as in films- fish tank( the main character wears same clothes everyday, beat down trainers – we have a parent who drinks and brings any man in the house and ho that affects her kids- they become violent, use foul language , and also smoke- follow footsteps of parents
This view is that lower class youths don't end up anywhere due to their social backgrounds We will challenge this by showing Show footage of youths that do end up well such as N-Dubz- Tulisa who had no gcse’s and made her self better and show high schools where youths do really well- Wembley high 95% pass rate .
We will show the different portrayal of wealthy youths
-IMAGES OF CELEBS- Paris Hilton, Kelly Osborne, Mary Kate Olsen and voice over of how they are drug users and its easier for them to access drugs due to the fact that they have the money, they know the people whereas lower class adolescents don't have connection to the strongest dugs like cocaine
(PRESENTER TALKING ABOUT THESE POINTS)-They turn to dugs( Paris Hilton) as they have easy access to it.- closed minded -Don’t know much about life whereas lower class s appreciate life more - ‘ rich commit crimes but less likely to get a lot of time in jail to how they have financial support from parents.
-End with how the media portrays youths very generally as there are cons and pros to being wealthy and being of lower class.
What will happen in next episode
Music videos and games- how youths are represented through that
