TheBuildingTechnologytrackencompassesabroadspectrumofengineeringandarchitecturaldesignskillsthatleadtooneofthedominantprofessionsofthefuture:thesustainabledesigner.Throughfocusingonstructural,façadeandclimatedesign,studentslearnhowtocontributetosmartbuildingsthataresustainable,comfortableandenvironmentallyintelligent.Theemphasisofthisprogrammeisonthedesignofinnovativeandsustainablebuildingcomponentsandtheirintegrationintothebuiltenvironment.
Thisprogrammestandsoutinternationallybecauseofitsintegrationofarchitecturaldesignwithtechnicaldisciplines,fillingthenichebetweenarchitectureandengineering.Ratherthanfocusingononeortwospecialisations,studentsinvestigatethewholebreadthofbuildingtechnology,lookingatclimatedesign,façadedesignandstructuraldesign,producingdesignersthatknowhowengineerswork.StudentshavetheoptiontoparticipateintheTiSDcolloquium,aninterdisciplinary,universitywidecourseinengineeringforsustainabledevelopment,whichleadsto
thespecialannotationTechnologyinSustainableDevelopment(TiSD,orTiDOinDutch)totheirdegree.ThisincludestheTiSDcourse‘Engineeringforsustainabledevelopment’wherestudentsparticipateinanintensiveworkshop,exploring,discussingandexperiencingsustainability.Prospectivestudentsmustshowbothtechnicalandarchitecturalskills,interestandunderstanding.
Theprogrammeiswellsuitedforarchitecturalgraduateslookingtostrengthentheirtechnicalqualificationsandthosewithatechnicalbackgroundthatwanttostrengthentheirdesignabilities.TheBuildingTechnologytrackisoneoffivespecialisationtrackswithintheArchitecture,UrbanismandBuildingSciencesmasterprogramme.Ongraduation,studentsreceiveMasterofSciencedegreeinArchitecture,UrbanismandBuildingSciences(BuildingTechnologytrack).

TheBuildingTechnologytrackfocusesonresearchandinnovation,dealingwiththenewesttechnologyandinteractingwiththecurrentmarket.Thisprogrammeoffersabalancebetweenappliedresearchanddesignofbuildingsandbuildingelements.Corebuildingtechnologysubjectsareofferedinthefirstsemester,withstudentsgiventheopportunitytospecialiseindifferentbuildingtechnologyelectivesinthesecond.Thefinalyearbeginswithanon-siteworkshopbeforeconcludingwithindividualgraduationprojects.
TheBuildingTechnologytrackoffersonegraduationstudio:sustainabledesign.Inthisstudiostudentsaregiventhepossibilitytospecialiseinoneofthreethemesthatarerelatedtosustainabilityandnotstrictlyseparatedfromeachother.
StructuralDesigndealswithinnovationinbuildingstructuresandmaterials,employingtoolssuchasprototypingandcomputationaldesignofbearingstructures.ClimateDesigninvestigatessmartandbioclimaticdesign,withafocusonclosingmaterialcycles,novelbuildingservices,energyperformance,andusercomfortandhealth.FaçadeDesignconcernsinnovationinbuildingenvelopes,investigatingdifferenttypologies,materialisation,climateanduserresponsivefaçades,fabricationandassemblyoffaçadesystems.
Inthefirstsemesterstudentsdevelopcoretechnicalknowledge,followinganinnovationandsustainabilitycourseandtheBuckyLabseminarsanddesignstudio,givingthemtheopportunitytoconstructtheirownprojectina1:1scale.Inthesecondsemesterstudentscanchoosefromtechnicalelectivesofferedbythebuildingtechnologytrack.TheyalsofollowEXTREMEorMEGA,projectsforintegrateddesign.Thesefirsttwosemestersofthebuildingtechnologytrackpartiallycoincidewiththearchitecturalengineeringspecialisationofthearchitecturetrack.InthethirdsemestertheSWATstudiotakestheformofanintensetwo-weekworkshop,focusingonaparticularlocationfromwhichstudentsdevelopindividualprojects.Inthefinalsemesterstudentsdevelopagraduationproject,whichisoftenacontinuationoftheirresearchintheSWATstudio.
Buildingtechnologygraduatesareinhighdemandastheconstructionindustryislackingdesignersthatbridgethisgapbetweenthearchitecturalandengineeringdisciplines.Giventhatgraduatescanmakedecisionsbasedoncalculationsandintegratethemintoarchitecture,theycandirectstructuralengineersandmanagecomplexprocesses.Graduatesaresoughtafterforarchitecturaloffices,engineeringofficesandspecialisedfaçademanufacturers.
WhiledoingaBachelorinArchitectureinAustriaIrealisedthatIwasmostpassionateaboutthetechnicalandtechnologicalaspectsofconstruction.IstartedlookingforamasterprogrammethatcouldbridgethegapbetweenarchitectureandengineeringandIwasveryhappytofindtheBuildingTechnologytrack.Thetrackdidnotonlyteachmenewknowledgebutaswell,andmostimportantly,anewwayofthinking:arationalmindsettowardsproblemsandacompletenewoverviewonresearchanddesigningmethods.AtBuildingTechnologythestudentsareencouragedtostudyinaveryindependentway,tosettheirowngoalsandmanagetheirschedules.Thismightbearadicalchangeformanyinternationalstudents,butithasbeenanextremelypositivechangeforme.Studentsarefollowedonanone-to-onebasis,andIalwaysfoundsupportwhenIneededit.Thisapproachallowsmetogrowandevolveasaprofessionalandasanindividual,itgivesmeconfidenceandthenecessarypreparationtoleavetheuniversityandfindajob.IntheMastertrackBuildingTechnology,studentsareinspiredtofindtheirownfieldofinterest,inordertoexcelinaspecifictopic.ItookthespecializationinTechnologyinSustainableDevelopmentanddecidedtofocusonenergyefficiency.Forme,thisspecificpreparationnotonlygrantedemployment,butalsoopenedthepossibilityofafurtherpost-graduateposition.
