Properties of Matter

Physical Properties

Has 2 properties.

- Physical

-Chemical

- Mass- Weight- Volume- Density- Malleability - Conductivity- Boiling Point

Page 3: Properties of matter

Mass vs. Weight

Mass & Weight are NOT the same- Mass ALWAYS stays the same- Weight changes depending

where you are.- Ex. On the moon your mass

would be the same as on earth but your weight would be different.

Volume

Malleability

Conductivity

Boiling Point

Space something takes up. All 3 dimensional objects have itHow easily something can be

shaped

Can carry an electric current

At what point a Substance boils

Physical Changes to Matter

Condensation

Sublimation

Is a change in size, shape, or state of matter.

- Examples:- Water freezing into Ice- Water boiling and becoming a gas- Ice melting

Where a gas is reduced to a liquid or solid form. Ex: Soda Can

Where an object changes from a solid to a gas without becoming a liquid

Chemical Properties

Chemical Changes

Is a characteristic of a substance that indicates whether it can go through a chemical change

- Flammability- Reactivity- pH (Acid or Base)

- Burns- Produces a gas (bubbles)- Color change- Produces a precipitate (makes a

solid from mixing 2 liquids)

Chemical or Physical Change?

• Tearing Paper?• Mixing Salt and Water?• Burning Paper?• Evaporating the water to leave the salt?• Baking Soda and Vinegar?• Dry Ice becoming a Gas?• Mentos and diet coke?• Gasoline Combustion in a car?
