The QLTS Assessments• Part 1: Multiple Choice Test (MCT) – written assessment - tests Outcomes A1-A11 180

multiple choice questions, divided into three-hour periods of morning and afternoon sessions (90 questions each)

• Part 2: Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) – practical assessment (new format from 2014) - tests five skills:

• Interviewing

• Advocacy

• Legal research

• Legal drafting

• Legal writing

• Part II tests the skills in each of the areas of business law, civil and criminal litigation, and property and probate. It is based on the practical assessment used for medical students.

Assessment Rules The MCT must be passed before the OSCE is attempted The rules allow three attempts at each of the two parts of the

assessments during the five-year validity of your Certificate of Eligibility

Exemptions can only be granted by the SRA to EEA and intra-UK lawyers

Lawyers from other jurisdictions cannot obtain exemptions Candidates are not allowed to use any materials during the

assessments

Taking the Assessments• All the assessments are offered twice a year in London, UK –

the next MCT is set for February 12, 2014. The OSCE will be offered in April/May 2014 (TBC)

• You must obtain a Certificate of Eligibility to sit the assessments

• A list of Qualified Lawyers in Recognised Jurisdictions is published at the SRA website

• Lawyers from certain jurisdictions need to satisfy the English language requirement (exemptions available)

Why Do You Need a QLTS Course Provider?

• Kaplan QLTS cannot provide preparation courses

• You have only 3 attempts per assessment during the five-year validity of your Certificate of Eligibility

• The MCT is a standardised test with no specific or pre-determined pass mark. The pass mark is determined by a ‘Standard Setting Panel’ convened by the SRA. You therefore must excel and score a higher mark than other candidates who sat the test together with you

• The OSCE is a very unique practical assessment. You cannot adequately prepare just by reading a book

Pass Rate on the MCT – January 2013

• According to Kaplan QLTS published results, the overall pass rate on the MCT sitting in January 2013 was 59%

• The pass for QLTS School’s course-takers was 81% while for non-course takers it was 38%

The OSCE Course• The practical assessment aims to test higher level of knowledge,

understanding and ability to accurately advise clients in all 3 legal practice areas, using a variety of skills. It is harder than the LPC

• Based on the assessment system used for medical students – practical, not theoretical

• The skills of Interviewing, Advocacy, Writing, Drafting and Online Legal Research are assessed through various simulated legal environments using different techniques, including actors as interview clients and use of professional legal databases

• You should be able to know and understand the relevant legal principles and be able to explain those to the client or argue those in a mock hearing, know which documents to use and also to draft various documents yourself when needed

The OSCE Course• The course is designed to bridge the gap between your

academic study of the 3 practice areas, foundation subjects and legal skills which can only be gained through practising experience

• The preparation – like the assessment – emphasises practice over theory
