QUESTION 1: IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE,DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF MEDIA PRODUCTS ?
Rory Oakley
The Documentary’s Influences
In order to get a clear idea of the codes and conventions of documentaries we initially watched Morgan Spurlock’s Supersize me documentary where he attempts to maintain a bizarre diet of purely McDonald's for 30 days. https://vimeo.com/16516935
Once we found the topic of our documentary which was youtube we searched for documentaries of the kind and found the documentaries vlogumentary and Please subcribe: A documentary about youtubers. I would say these two documentaries we were the most key in finding the typical codes and conventions of documentaries whith the same genre type.
Voxpops & Expert Interviews Voxpops are a feature we used that we felt was highly
important. In order to gain the general opinion on whether YouTube was a legitimate career choice or just a hobby. We received feedback of students from the sixth form to gather their thoughts on this project instead of the general public as we thought it would be smart to keep to our specific audience of young people.
Expert Interviews are a very important addition of documentaries. It allows people with a high amount of knowledge of the subject to give their opinion on it whether it be biased or not, In this case our two expert YouTuber’s were Elise & Charlotte, with Julie Mainland being our mutual expert giving us a fair view of YouTube.
The Main Title
The first Main image the audience will see is the main title, this has to stand out and as well as this it must fit the colour scheme that has followed throughout it also must correspond with the other forms of media such as the magazine article.
Particpary mode
Particpary Mode We came together to decide that we
wouldn’t be adding ourselves into the documentary as on screen presenters as it wouldn’t suit the documentary type. With the use of our on-screen presenter, full range of archive footage and on screen facts and figures such as ‘Over 6 Billion hours of YouTube videos are watched each month”. This made the use of the on-screen presenter unnecessary.
The use of Shots
The range of angled shots in the documentary were specifically used in our introduction shot where we used our title, these were used to show the brands which are closely knit with YouTube most importantly apple who use YouTube on a range of their products. The close up shots were mainly used for our voxpops so our documentary could follow codes and conventions of others,
The use of setting
The use of setting throughout the documentary was mainly filmed in the sixth form. There are some shots filmed in places around Solihull such as the Touchwood centre. By doing this we still maintained our specific target audience of the 16 – 25 demographic.
