• The Lone hero
RECOGNISABLE GROUPS IN ACTION FILMS
Why?
Men are presented this way to show dominance and the Alpha
male nature that all men naturally have. The macho man nature
also has a sex appeal to it which is what attracts the audience, a
somewhat brawn over brain. Examples: (Rambo (S. Stallone) and
Die Hard (B.Willis))

However, this was in the past, nowadays there is still the

Stark has to enhance a product to stop the shrapnel reaching his
heart and also building his suit.
MEN IN OUR OPENING
For the casting of Steven as the protagonist we had the Idea of a
modern hero, a ‘nerd’, ‘geek’ style. Our image was a person who
reads comic books, plays video games and it of an above average
intelligence, but, when necessary can have courage and bravery.
Initial characters we based it on were Jesse Eisenberg’s character
in the 2010 film The Social Network, Mark Zuckerberg.

Another inspiration was the character of Peter Parker in the (2002)
spider man series portrayed by Tobey Maguire. I chose this
particular series because feel that the McGuire looks more ‘nerdy’
and fits our character description than Andrew Garfield, because in
the latest films Garfield is more sexualised than Maguire. Which is
not the effect we wanted in our film.

I feel that we represented Steven’s character as a part of the
adolescent social group, but as somewhat of an outcast using the
technique of ‘the lone wolf’ which makes him seem mysterious.

I also think that we represented him as someone who is brave but
open to emotions, because of the fact that he has lost his parents
which is a traumatic situation to go through. In a way he is like
Batman in the sense that he has lost his parents, but unlike
batman, he is an ordinary teenager like me.
WOMEN IN ACTION FILMS
• Women are seen as more helpers in the movie and there to look
pretty there is even a theory about it.

• Laura Mulvey, a feminist film theorist came up with the The
Male Gaze theory, saying women are merely represented to
provide pleasure for men.

• Their costume is purposefully provocative and the camera
lingers on the woman’s body.

For the examples I had chosen the same actress (Angelina Jolie)
or 2 different action movies, to illustrate the point that it is not just a
one time thing for actresses in films. Nevertheless in Tomb Raider,
Jolie is the main character, which is the only point that doesn’t
adhere to the theory, because she isn’t just there for the gaze of
men but she is the main protagonist in the film.

For the casting of the antagonist, we wanted it to be a woman to
challenge the point that in action films women are not just sexual
symbols or damsels in distress. It would also help our film stand
out since it would not be expected by the audience

We wanted an innocent looking person because it would further
add to the surprise and shock factor. Initially we didn’t picture an
ethnicity of the actors but I think that for the antagonist it is good
because it could suggest a different plot such as a Asian Triad plot
for the film which makes it stand out.

Furthermore many notorious villains have been Asian in well known
films such as Oddjob from Goldfinger (1964) portrayed by Harold
Sakata.

• For the character of Meea, I had received inspiration from
Sienna Miller’s character in G.I Joe (Baroness). This is because
she is the complete opposite of the damsel in distress character
which is what we were aiming for and were trying to challenge.
Even though Miller’s character is sexualised and falls under the
gaze theory, I still feel that she is a good inspiration for this
character.

I believe that through Meea’s character, we showed the not all
women are weak and follow the damsel in distress rule.
Furthermore, we tried to show that we have made her a strong
character. Lastly we have tried show that we have not made her as
a part of the Gaze theory and that she is there for a major purpose.

I feel that to improve, we could have done more research into how
to present her based on her ethnicity because we could have made
the plot more dynamic.
