The Experiential Learning Cycle (see Dewey and Kolb) is an excellent reflective tool for deepening one’s awareness of their teaching practices. The description stage asks teachers to step back and examine the teaching and learning experience from a distance. This distance then gives the teacher the space to closely examine their assumptions and create new interpretations of what may have happened in that moment. Once all possibilities have been exhausted, teachers are better equipped to make sound decisions about how they want to teach in the future by creating a SMART action plan. It is from this point of awareness that they are able to grow as teachers.
