What are Topic Sentence? What is the topic sentence?

The topic sentence is the first sentence in a paragraph. What does it do? It introduces the main idea of the paragraph.

How do I write one? Summarize the main idea of your paragraph. Indicate to the reader what your

paragraph will be about.

Example: There are three reasons why Canada is one of the best countries in the world. First,

Canada has an excellent health care system. All Canadians have access to medical services at a reasonable price. Second, Canada has a high standard of education.

Students are taught by well-trained teachers and are encouraged to continue studying at university. Finally, Canada's cities are clean and efficiently managed. Canadian cities have many parks and lots of space for people to live. As a result,

Canada is a desirable place to live.

What is a Citation?

A "citation" is the way you tell your readers that certain material in your work came from another source. It also gives your readers the information necessary to find that source again, including:

– information about the author– the title of the work– the name and location of the company that published your copy of

the source– the date your copy was published– the page numbers of the material you are borrowing

Look inside your brown folder for examples of citations. You can also use www.easybib.com to assist you in writing your citations.
