Leaves and cells

Page 2: RHS Level 2 Certificate Year 1 Session 4

Learning outcomes

1. Leaves – structure and purpose 1.1 Describe the structure of the leaf. 1.2 Describe how leaf shape, size, form and colour can vary. 1.3 Describe how leaves are adapted in order to perform certain functions 2. Plant Cells – structure and function 2.1 Describe the structure of the basic plant cell and state the function of the

basic components. 2.2 State where active cell division is located within the plant (apical and lateral

meristems) 2.3 Define the term: ‘plant tissue’. 2.4 Describe the basic characteristics and role of the tissues found in flowering

plants. 3. Plant file – plant identification from week 2 and introduce 3 new plants.

Leaves – structure and function

Basic external structure of the leaf and vocabulary

Internal structure of the leaf and vocabulary Function – photosynthesis, transpiration, gas

exchange

Leaves - adaptations

Autumn leaf fall – mechanism Adaptations for climbing – e.g. tendrils as in

Vitis vinifera Adaptations for extreme climates – needles,

leaf hairs Food storage – leaf adaptation found in bulbs Protection – spines and prickles.

Leaf form and leaf arrangement (phyllotaxy)

Various different leaf forms – known by different descriptive names to enable clear identification

Phyllotaxy is the name for the arrangement of leaves on a plant. Prevents the leaves from shading each other.

Cells – structure and function

Plant cells – internal structure Plant cells – function. Plant tissues – organisation and

differentiation of cells.
