The Greek World
• In the 8th Century BC the Greeks started to travel and set new colonies. They grew rich because of their trade and success at war.
What do we know about them?
• We know quite a lot about them because they left a lot of statues, pottery and writing about the things they did.
Growing up in Ancient Greece
Sons and daughters• Many Greeks would prefer a boy.• Unwanted or weak babies were left
outdoors in the winter and they were left there to die.
• Daughters were more expensive when there is an engagement.
Marriage • Most girls were 13-16 years old
when they got married. often their fathers chose their husbands for them. A girl’s husband was often older than in his 30’s.
Going to school
• Most Greeks schools had fewer than 20 boys and often classes were outside.
• Girls learned house work everyday and cooking and skills such as weaving at home.
Children's toys• Children played with small pottery
figures and dolls made out of rags wood wax clay- some dolls have moveable arms and legs.
• Children played with balls made out of tied up rags or blown up pigs bladder. The anklebones of sheep and goats made knucklebones or five stones.
Work
• Most boys had to work hard. They worked as farmers, sailors, fisherman and craft workers such as potters, builders, metalworkers and stone carvers.
Greek learning
• Boys at school learned reading writing arithmetic music and poetry. They wrote on wooden tablets covered with soft wax using a pointed stick called stylus .They used an abacus with beads to help with them with their maths.

One favourite family activity was to gather in the courtyard to hear stories of the Greek gods and goddesses adventures. The Greek houses in the 6th and 5th century BC were made up of two or three rooms. Many Greek heroes were posted on the walls.

• The Persians were the enemies' of all Spartan people. Persians would make wars with the Spartans. Persians would always be prepared for fights. They would come with over 500 or more Persians every fight.
What were the clothes made out of?
• Ancient Greek clothing is made out of two garments ,the tunic was made out of heavy fabric it was placed around the body and fastened at the shoulders with a pin or brooch.
What did the men of Ancient Greece wear?
• Men in ancient Greece wore a chiton similar to the one worn by the Women but knee length or shorter
• A shorter chiton was worn for excercise, horse riding and other activates
Did they have hats?
• The first real hat, the broad brimmed petasos, was invented by the Ancient Greeks. It was worn only for travelling. A chin strap held it when it was not needed as protection from the weather .
HousesStore room
In the store room were kept large storage jars, called amphorae and pithoi. These contained basic foodstuffs such as olive oil, wine and grain for grinding into flour
Work room
Craft industries like shoe of jewellery making often took place in workshops within the house. The slaves of the house hold would often work in there. The workshop is for gold-working
Bedroom
The bedrooms of the family were simply furnished. Wooden chests were similar to the couches used in the men's dining room. Wooden chests were used to store clothing and other items.
