•The rugby player needs to have the right physical attributes to succeed.

•Current players physical attributes more an advanced then players as few as 10 years ago.

TYPES OF STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING

STRENGTH TRAINING Resistance to muscular

contraction to build the strength, anaerobic endurance, and size of skeletal muscles

Including resistance and weight training

Weight training involves a manipulation of the number of repetitions (reps), sets, tempo, exercise types, and weight moved to cause desired increases in strength, endurance, and size.

SPEED TRAINING Based around the technical aspects of a running style/motion An S and C coach would target the ‘form’ of a player’s running

style to try and aid in his maximum output

FITNESS TRAINING Many different types of

fitness training including interval training, long distance running, Fartlek and Beep Tests

Essentially, the S and C coach determines what kind of fitness the team needs, and trains them accordingly.

Sport specific or cross code training – cycling, swimming etc.

Aids in preparation and recovery

Also can include training supplements
