Born 15th April 1452

Leonardo was born in Vinci, not far from Florence in Italy.5

Gazing in wonder and awe

Leonardo spent his childhood looking closely at nature and asking lots of questions about it.6

Animal lover and vegetarian

Leonardo used to buy caged birds at markets, just to let them go free.7

Mirror Writing

Back to front and right to left. (Italian) Maybe he used it as a secret code to protect all his amazing ideas!8

Artist Extraordinaire!

He moved to Florence and studied to become an artist9

Artist Extraordinaire!

He was asked to send an example of his work to show how good he was to someone who wanted him to paint a picture for him. Leonardo sent his drawing of a perfect circle.10

Mona Lisa

This very famous painting is now in the Louvre in Paris.11

The Last Supper

We buy paint from shops but in Leonardos time, paint was made from grinding up rocks, precious stones or plants then mixing with oil, or sometimes egg. Artists used crushed crocuses to make yellow, and even used Egyptian mummies to make dark brown! The Last Supper was painted directly onto a wall a fresco. It was made with egg yolk paint and is very fragile.12

Perspective

Leonardo used maths and perspective to show distance and space in his artwork and make it more 3D, even though it is really 2D and flat. He also used colour and shading to show distance.13

Seashells on Mountain Tops?

Leonardo spent a great deal of time studying nature. When he discovered seashells and fossils on the tops of mountains he realised that creatures must have lived there a very long time ago and the Earth had changed a great deal over time. He knew that the Earth was much, much, much older than people thought. His thinking was hundreds of years in front of Charles Darwin and other scientists who studied the age of the planet.15
