1st rule of Gutturals:Gutturals reject doubling. This means that they do not contain the Dagesh. Obvious exception to the rule is the Mappiq at the end

of the word in the He (ה).

The Dagesh indicates a strengthening in the consonant.

Only occurs in BeGaDKeFaT consonants

Denotes hard pronunciation of BeGaDKeFaTconsonants (see §1)

Looks the same as the next one, though … so we have a problem.

Known as “doubling” Dagesh

A consonant with a Dagesh forte closes one syllable and opens the next.

A Dagesh in a BeGaDKeFaT consonant could be either a Dagesh lene or forte.

So how do we tell the difference?

Page 7: Section 5: Signs of Articulation

A forte is in a consonant that closes the preceding syllable.

A consonant with a Dagesh forte must always precede a vowel.

Also: If a Dagesh is in a consonant that is not a BeGaDKeFaT, then it is a Dagesh forte.
