Infrastructure is the backbone of any modern day economy. Be it boom time or a period of recession, the need for multi-skilled workforce in the infrastructure development and maintenance industry is perennial.

In the next two decades, India is expected to double its economic infrastructure in terms of roads, telecommunication systems, water supply, power generation, ports and airports. According to Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, India's infrastructure and transportation sectors require nearly $400 billion USD investment over the next 7 - 8 years to develop world-class infrastructure that is so critical to meet India's growth targets.

Projects like the Golden Quadrilateral (joining four metropolitan cities viz. Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai through an 8-lane mega highway), Metro Rail and Sky Bus are inviting use of sophisticated and breakthrough technologies and multi-skilled work force.

Moreover, the Government of India is taking initiatives to further open up this sector to private players in order to boost growth and development.

India is the fifth largest energy consumer and the sixth in refining capacity globally. Out of the six Indian companies that have made it to the Fortune Global 500 list, five belong to the petroleum sector. Indian Oil & Gas companies are also expanding their global reach by picking oil equity in Vietnam, Russia, Sudan, Myanmar, Iraq, Libya, Syria and Yemen besides commencing marketing operations in Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Sudan, Romania, Venezuela, Russia, Kazakhstan and UK.

A huge captive demand for energy, excellent policy initiatives like the New Exploration Licensing Policy (NELP) by the Government of India, some world class discoveries in the Krishna-Godavari (KG) basin, Rajasthan, etc. and globalization of the Indian corporate sector, have all provided a fillip to the Indian Oil & Gas sector. NELP VI, awarded in March 2007, is expected to bring in investment of USD 8 - 10 billion. NELP VII is expected to offer 70 - 80 blocks (compared to 55 in NELP VI) and hence similar, if not additional, investment is expected.

With 26 sedimentary basins in an area of 3.14 million square kms. and prognosticated reserves of 28 billion tonnes of oil equivalent of gas, India is relatively unexplored with only 18% of area extensively explored (Source: DGH).

While these are some clear indicators of the growth potential for this sector, the latest PwC-Petrofed report also projects a huge shortage of skilled manpower and professionals in the Indian Oil & Gas industry, which will hit about 30,000 by the year 2012. Remuneration packages in the Oil & Gas industry are also set to rise

The Indian Power sector has been at the forefront of the Indian growth story. With huge captive coal reserves, significant potential for generation of power from renewable energy sources, and a highly investor friendly Government policy for setting up greenfield power projects, the Indian Power sector is rife with untapped opportunities.

Currently, India is the sixth largest power consumer in the world. With plans to add 78.7 GW of power generation capacity till March 2012, India will also be among the largest electricity generating countries. India’s electricity consumption is expected to grow at 8-10% per annum to keep pace with its accelerating economic growth. The sector is expected to offer investment opportunities in excess of around US $ 500 billion over the next decade.

Initiatives such as the Electricity Act 2003, Accelerated Power Development Reform Program (APDRP) and Ultra Mega Power Projects (UMPPs), with annual capacity of 4 GW each by the Ministry of Power augur well in terms of opportunities for professionals focused on this sector. The Indian power sector is at a critical point in its development and its progress is imperative to sustain India’s economic growth.

There is also significant potential in India for generation of power from renewable energy sources, such as Wind, Small Hydro, Biomass and Solar Energy. India is ranked No. 2 in bio-gas with installation of over 40 lakh Biogas plants and No. 4 in Wind Energy Development globally by achieving 7,300 MW power connecting to grids. The Ministry has set a target of 12,000 MW fresh capacity addition in the next five years, including 7,000 MW from the wind energy segment, 2,500 MW from Hydel sources and the rest from co-generation. Overall, the Government is targeting up to 80,000 MW of power generation capacity through renewable sources by 2032.

NTPC has lined up plans to invest Rs. 6,000 crore in creating 1,000 MW of renewable energy capacity over the next 10 years. NTPC also plans to add 30-50 MW from geothermal power projects and 35 MW from small biomass and solar sources.

The logistics market in India is estimated to be Rs. 260,000 crores and constitutes 13% of the GDP (as compared to an average of 10% in other developing countries). The global logistics industry is valued at US$ 3.5 trillion. Global Market Analysis firm Datamonitor’s "India Logistics Outlook 2007" report estimates the Indian logistics industry at over US$ 125 billion. The sector currently employs over 40 million people globally.

Burgeoning trade, increased geographical distribution of incomes and markets, better than expected performance of the manufacturing sector and an explosive growth in the third party logistics segment has contributed to the phenomenal growth of the Indian Logistics and Supply Chain sector. In the Indian scenario, there is an impressive growth of container traffic of over 15% per annum over the last five years.

Many large Indian corporate such as Tata and Reliance Industries have started providing in-house logistics services and, sensing market growth, have started providing services to other corporates as well. PSUs have come up with Joint Service Organizations to felicitate in-house logistics activities (IOCL, BPCL, HPCL, ONGC, GAIL, CONCOR, etc.). Large express cargo and courier companies such as Transport Corporation of India (TCI) and Blue Dart have also started logistics operations. These companies enjoy the advantage of already having a large asset base and an all-India distribution network. Indian shippers are also gradually becoming more aware of the benefits of logistics outsourcing. They are now realizing that customer service and delivery performance are equally important as cost to remain competitive in the global economy. With the 100% FDI regime, most of the large logistics MNCs have presence in the country, primarily in the freight management business. These MNCs have also started acquiring local distribution companies to strengthen operations locally to derive integrated benefits.

Investment boost in infrastructure development by the Government has brought the Logistics sector in focus. Some examples are:

The Golden Quadrilateral Project, East-West and North-South corridors (connecting four major metros)

Free Trade and Warehousing Zones (FTWZ) in line with Special Economic Zones (SEZ) with 100% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and public-private partnerships (PPP) in infrastructure development

As the Indian economy integrates with the world economy, the Government of India has set ambitious targets to accelerate the country’s participation in International Business. India’s first ever long term Foreign Trade Policy is one such initiative in this direction whose objective would be to double India’s share in global trade by 2020, which according to estimates is currently less than 2%.

Services, particularly finance (insurance) and transportation of goods, are traditional complements to Manufacturing. With the spread of telecommunications and computer technologies, virtually all commercial services have become trade-able across borders. The trend of globalisation, reinforced by liberalisation policies and the removal of regulatory obstacles, has fuelled steady growth of international investment and trade in services.

The Government of India has entered into a number of bilateral agreements like CEPA, etc. to further accelerate the growth of the flows of bilateral trade and investment between India and individual countries.

AT Kearney's Global Services Location Index has ranked India as second in the world in terms of financial attractiveness, people and skills availability and business environment. It is the second most attractive destination for FDI after China, ahead of US, Russia and Brazil. Cumulative amount of FDI inflows till date amount to 4,04,728 (Rs); 92, 158 (US $ m).

Besides, the country has raised FDI limits in petroleum refinery, aviation, commodity exchanges, credit information companies and mining of some precious metals to attract more capital and boost growth.

India will need massive investment up to March 2012, including $500 billion in infrastructure, to sustain high growth rates.

With a growth rate of 18% per annum, the Indian aviation industry is one of the fastest growing aviation industries in the world. The Government's open sky policy has led to many overseas players entering the market and the industry has been growing both in terms of players and number of aircrafts.

Today, private airlines account for around 75% share of the domestic aviation market. Scheduled domestic air services are now available from 82 airports as against 75 in 2006. The Indian Civil Aviation market grew at a CAGR of 18%, and was worth US$ 5.6 billion in 2008. By 2020, Indian airports are expected to handle more than 100 million passengers including 60 million domestic passengers and around 3.4 million tonnes of cargo per annum.

Significant measures to propel further growth in the civil aviation sector are on the anvil. Investment in airport infrastructure will go up US$ 9 billion by 2013, of which close to US$ 6.8 billion is expected to come through public private partnerships (PPP) model, according to a study by research firm Frost & Sullivan. This is expected to open up a vast array of opportunities for trained professionals in the Aviation and Allied Services.

Over the next 2 decades, India is envisaged to be one of the largest Aerospace Markets in the world for wide and narrow body aircrafts.
