Self-Assessment Self-Assessment Modules Modules The project will develop five sets of modules to be used for formative assessment utilising open educational resources. Each module provides an opportunity for students to self-assess their understanding of the unit material and the adaptive feedback provides a unique experience for each student tailored to his or her response. The learning resources will be made available under a Creative Commons licence and initially disseminated to Australian universities that are using the Moodle Learning Management System (LMS).

Self-Assessment ModulesSelf-Assessment ModulesThe project will develop five sets of modules to be used for formative assessment utilising open educational resources.

OEResources

Open educational resources (OER) can be defined as,“ . . . .teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain that permits their free use or re-purposing by others”. (Atkins, Brown & Hammond, 2007).

This project will seek to address the discoverability of appropriate material that is the major hurdle in the adoption of OER in higher education. The majority of funding for this project will be directed to relieving academics from teaching duties for a three-week period. This time will be spent developing multiple-choice questions and adaptive feedback while assessing open-educational resources sourced by the project lead. The learning resources will then be made available under a creative commons licence and openly accessible to other institutions.

Rich media

The modules consist of six multiple choice or interactive activities.

Each question has some form of rich media. This could be an image, audio, video, links to additional information or embedded slideshows.

They have been designed to stimulate engagement with the unit material by offering small examples of content, a question and a feedback response.

Adaptive

Adaptive technology involves students having a personalised experience within a module based on their responses.

The self assessment modules allow capable students to quickly assess their understanding while those requiring extra support are given additional questions and feedback.
