When I was little, vaccinating children against contagious viral diseases

got the mumps. My face swelled, especially behind my ear, and I felt very

bad. When I entered primary school, an epidemic spread rapidly among

the children, and, of course, I got sick again. I think this time it was the

measles that attacked me. Although my skin was covered with little red

spots, it didn’t hurt very much. Three years later, when I was finished the

fourth grade, I started feeling as if I had a cold; in fact, my mother thought

I was coming down with the flu because I had a headache and a fever, but

after a careful look at my body, she realized that I had caught chicken pox.

The treatment to cure all these diseases was, invariably, staying in

bed, drinking a lot of water, and taking an aspirin every six hours. It

worked in most of cases. However, I remember that some children who

didn’t follow the instructions ended up in a hospital with serious problems

with their lungs, kidneys, or liver and, in the worst of cases, they got

pneumonia and died.
