SEWING NEEDLE

A sewing needle is a long slender tool with a pointed tip. The needle must be able to penetrate the material being sewn, by pushing the yarns aside according to the application, without damaging it. The various parts of the needle are: The shank, the shoulder, the blade, Long Groove, Short Groove, The eye, the point and the Tip.

Parts of needle

1. ShankThe shank is the upper portion of the needle that is inserted into the machine. The front is rounded and the back is flat. Home sewing machine needles are composed of a flat and a round side, to assist in always having the needle in the correct position.

2. ShaftThe shaft is the lower portion of the needle that begins at the base of the shank and extends to the point. The needle size is determined by the shaft diameter.

3. GrooveThe groove is the indentation located on the front of the needle. The thread is protected in the channel as the needle passes through the fabric.

4. ScarfThe scarf is the indentation on the back of the needle above the eye. The scarf allows the bobbin thread to pass closely to the needle eye catching the needle thread to create a stitch.

5. EyeThe eye is the hole in the lower portion of the shaft. The thread passes from the front to the back of the needle through the eye. Select a needle with the appropriate size eye to accommodate the thread you are using. The thread should flow freely through the eye.

6. PointThe point is the tip of the needle that penetrates the fabric. Needle points are designed to penetrate different fabric types.

1. Needle Sizes:

Needle packages are marked with two size numbers. The higher number is the European metric system and defines the needle shaft diameter in fractions of a millimeter. The lower number is the American numbering system.

2. Types of needle: (on the basis of points)

1. Cloth point: Cloth point needles are for all woven fabric. The cloth point is especially helpful when sewing straight lines and tasks such as tops stitching.

Accute point: used for elastics attachments. It is not used for light weight or medium weight fabric as it may damage the fabric.

Regular point:it is popularly used needle.

Page 5: Sewing needle

2. Ball Point: Ball Point is more rounded than Universal, designed to slide between yarns of knit fabrics without snagging.

3. Universal needles can be used with woven or knit fabric. The point of a universal needle is sharp yet very slightly rounded giving it the characteristics of a sharp and a ballpoint needle.

3. Cut Point Needles has Sharp tips and is used for sewing leather and plastics. It modifies set of stitching and appearance of seam. It also creates decorative effects.

Narrow wedge points: it cuts at right angle to seam direction. With the help of this needle high stitched density is used.

Narrow reverse twist point: Produces incisions at 45 degrees to seam direction. The seam is slightly turned left on the surface of the material.

Cross point: Incisions is along line of the seam. Requires large stitch length. Incisions spaced far apart. Used for heavy decorative seams. Stitche shave straight appearance.

Special needles:

1. Denim/JeansVery sharp point and stiff shank for stitching tightly woven fabrics like denim, canvas and multiple fabric layers. Also available as a double needle.

2. Hemstitch/Wing

Small ball point

Medium ball point

Heavy ball point

Page 6: Sewing needle

Wide “wings” on sides of needle create openwork stitching in tightly-woven fabrics, such as linen and batiste. Use for hemstitching and heirloom embroidery. Also available as double needle

3. LeatherWedge shaped point pierces real leather & suede, creating small stitch holes and strong seams. Never use on woven or knit fabrics.

4. Machine EmbroideryDesigned with a special scarf and large eye to prevent shredding and breakage when stitching dense designs with rayon and special machine embroidery threads. Also available as a double needle

5. MetallicaSpecial scarf prevents skipped stitches; the large eye accommodates heavier threads and the large groove prevents shredding of delicate metallic threads. Also available as a double needle.

6. QuiltingTapered needle with sharp point for stitching through multiple fabric layers and intersecting seams.

7. StretchSpecial design prevents skipped stitches on swimwear and knit fabrics that contain spandex or Lycra as well as synthetic suedes.

8. Twin needleUsed for Topstitching, pin tucking and decorative stitching. Two needles on single shaft produce two rows of stitches. Measurement between needles ranges from 1.6mm to 6mm, and needles come with universal, stretch, embroidery, denim, and Metallica points.

Sizes of twin needle:

1.6/70 1.6/80, 2.0/80 2.5/80, 3.0/90 4.0/80, 4.0/90 4.0/100, 6.0/100 8.0/100, Assorted

9. Triple needleUsed for Topstitching, pin tucking and decorative stitching. Cross bar on single shaft connects three needles to sew three stitching rows. Comes with universal point in 2.5mm and 3mm widths.

Sizes of triple needle:

2.5/803.0/80

10. Spring NeedleFree-motion stitching with dropped feed dogs. Has wire spring above point to prevent fabrics from riding up onto needle, eliminating need for presser foot.

11. Curve needles

• Used for blind stitches

Adjustment done in needle:

1. Cliff scarf:

2. Tapered blade: To avoid yarn breakage the needle has radial shape in the area where shank connects the blade.

3. Q-Ball point: minimizes the damage of the fabric
