DESCRIPTION

Presentation delivered by 2 of the #oldsmoop collaboration team on 10 February 2014 at #eMOOCs2014 in Lausanne. Collaborative autoethnography employed to explore learner views of their own success in OLDSMOOC and role of connection, self-direction and adaptation, and self-efficacy emerged as key themes. Findings are that 1. in learning success is a personal construct, 2.that active connection appears to facilitate learning and persistence, 3. experience with these forms of learning increase self-efficacy which is then strengthened by further success and 4. adaptation of the curriculum is inherent and inevitable if success is personal. Initial analysis of subsequent survey to establish if these themes are reflected more broadly OLDSMOOC participants suggest this holds.

Formulating Research Questions

We propose an additional view, one

that considers the individual

learners’ measures of success, and

their perception of the success of

their learning.

Defining Success“The authors variably define success

as they intended to learn different things and differently adapted the experience to meet their context and their needs.”

Helen: “Locating [a project partner] and realising that we had corresponding aims was as an important support for learning in the complex environment of OLDSMOOC.”

“…This is how I see my participation in CoPs and MOOCs. I need time to lower my affective filter to build confidence to find a springboard, which will take me to the centre”

“Although the content of the MOOC was truly inspiring, success for me experiencing the participating in a cMOOC itself.

I did and thus it was successful”

“This was the second MOOC I completed (out of about 4). I've taken more MOOCs since then as a result of my good experience here.”

“I consider myself tech-savvy, so I don't know how others may have reacted who are not as tech savvy as I.”

“It was on me to be more effective, I couldn't manage to organize myself and participate even at the lowest levels. Yet, this is another thing I learnt about participating at MOOCs (self regulation!)”
