IS SILENT THE SAME AS PASSIVE?• THE PROJECT DEALS WITH SILENT OR PASSIVE LEARNING IN ONLINE

EDUCATION FOR ADULTS.• CLARIFY/EXPLORE/UNDERSTAND WHAT SEEMS TO BE A STRUCTURAL CHANGE

IN THE WAY ADULT LEARNERS PARTICIPATE IN EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES.

Page 3: Silent learners: DISTANS presentation

THE 2 YEARS LIFETIME OF THE PROJECT CONSISTS OF FOUR DEVELOPMENT AND TEST PHASES.

• 1. TOOLS FOR ACTIVATING PASSIVE LEARNERS.• 2. TOOLS FOR PREDICTING PASSIVE LEARNERS.• 3. TOOLS FOR RECOGNITION OF OF PASSIVE LEARNERS’ LEARNING .• 4. TESTING THE THREE TYPES OF TOOLS ALONGSIDE EACH OTHER.

HOWEVER, IT IS NOT THAT EASY…• ADULT - LEARNING• FORMAL LEARNING (SCHOOLS)• NON-FORMAL LEARNING (COURSES)• INFORMAL LEARNING (LIFE)

Page 5: Silent learners: DISTANS presentation

HOWEVER, IT IS NOT THAT EASY…• ADULT - LEARNING … OR DID THEY LEARN?• FORMAL LEARNING - IT´S EASY - WE CAN JUST MAKE AN EXAM • NON-FORMAL LEARNING – IT´S NOT THAT EASY AS WE DO NOT HAVE SPECIFIC

LEARNING GOALS • INFORMAL LEARNING – IT´S IMPOSSIBLE AS WE NOT EVEN DEFINE LEARNING

OBJECTIVES

WHAT IS ADULT LEARNING?• WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF LEARNING?• DIRECTLY USE OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING• INDIRECT USE OF KNOWLEDGE FOR DEVELOPMENT OF NEW KNOWLEDGE,

INNOVATION AND NEW OPPORTUNITIES

• WHAT IS THE INTENSITY OF LEARNING• CONTRUCTIVE ADDITION OF KNOWLEDGE TO THE EXISTING PERSONAL BODY OF

KNOWLEDGE• CREATION OF A PERSONAL PARADIGME SHIFT

Page 9: Silent learners: DISTANS presentation

Intensity of learning: adding to the

(personal) existing body of knowledge (constructive)

Purpose of learning: directly use knowledge

and understanding

Learning contributes to slightly improving conducting a task.

For example:course on working with an ICT tool

Learning contributes to building further towards new knowledge, innovation and new opportunities

For example: a language course/ specific non-work related subject course

Purpose of learning: use

what is learned to develop new knowledge and

start innovations and new

opportunities

Learning contributes to doing things differently on the basis of a new understanding.

For example: Learning on a management skills or a personality training

Learning contributes to changes in career, work, society etc.

For example: Learning by experiencing a life-changing, disruptive event

Intensity of learning: creating a (personal) ‘paradigm shift’ (disruptive)

CONCLUSION – OR NONCLUSION• IT SEEMS THAT THE CONCEPT FOR OUR PROJECT HAS FAILED• WE REALLY HAVE PROBLEMS JUSTIFYING WE MUST ACTIVATE THE PASSIVE AND SILENT LEARNERS

• HOWEVER, WE HAVE POINTET AT - WHAT WE CAN CALL A MAJORITY MISUNDERSTANDING• THE OVERALL UNDERSTANDING IS THAT SILENT OR PASSIVE LEARNING IS WASTE OF TIME

• SO WHAT CAN WE DO NOW?• THE ASSUMPTION HAS SEROIUS CONSEQUENSES FOR INSTANCE IN RELATION TO HOW

UNIVERSITIES AND OTHER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS ARE GRANTED• WHAT OTHER THINGS DO YOU PROPOSE US TO DO?
