Types of Sentences
Simple Sentence A simple sentence has one independent
clause but no subordinate clauses.
The trains made ninety-seven stops.
It can contain phrases. Carrying passengers and freight, the trains of
the Trans-Siberian Railway made ninety-seven stops at large and small stations / on their trips / across the vast expanses /of the Asian Russia.

Compound Sentence A compound sentence has two or more
independent clauses that are joined together. May be connected by a comma & a coordinating
conjunction, by a semicolon, or by a semicolon & a conjunctive adverb
The people of ancient times built the Seven Wonders of the World, but only the Great Pyramid still stands.
Sonja won three Olympic figure-skating championships; this led to her being given staring roles in Hollywood films.
Mary Martin played Nellie Forbush in the Broadway version of South Pacific; however, she did not play this in the film version.

independent clause and one or more subordinate clauses.
The passengers grumbled when the airline announced the third postponement of their flight.

Compound-Complex A compound-complex sentence has two or more
independent clauses and one or more subordinate clauses. The independent clauses are joined by a coordinating
conjunction preceded by a comma, a conjunctive adverb preceded by a semicolon, or by a semicolon alone.
