Simple Machines are used for the mechanical advantage. It makes something easier to do,but it takes longer to do it.

A wedge pushes materials apart, and cuts things. The knife cuts through bread

or food, and the fork cuts through food when you use it to eat salad, fruit, etc.(The knife was found in my kitchen.)(The fork was found in my kitchen, as

well.)

A wheel and axle makes it easy to move things by rolling them. It also reduces

friction. The car makes it easy to go from place to place, and the roller blades also

make it easy to move somewhere at a quicker rate.

(The car was found in the parking lot.)(The roller blades were found in the storage room.)

A lever makes lifting weight easier. It uses a fulcrum to redirect force over a longer distance.

Without a bottle opener it would be very difficult to open a bottle and it would take a lot longer.

Also without a screwdriver it would be hard to put things together with screws, or take them

apart.

( The bottle opener was found in my kitchen. ) ( The screwdriver was also found in my kitchen. )

An inclined plane makes it easier to move objects upward, but you have to go further horizontally. Stairs make it easier to get from one floor to another, instead of jumping to where you need to go.( Stairs in front of my home. ) ( Stairs in a basement. )

A screw turns the rotation into a lengthwise movement, it takes up many twists to go a short distance, and it holds things together. Without screws nothing would be able to hold together, and everything would be one piece. It would be very hard to get a computer desk, cabinet, etc. through the door without screws to put the things together.( I found the jar lid in my kitchen cabinet. ) ( I found the screws in the tool shed. )

A pulley makes lifting things with a rope easier. It redirects force and the addition of additional pulleys. To put a flag up on the top of a flag pole would be tricky if we didn’t have a pulley. If we didn’t have window shades/blinds, too much sunlight would get into our homes, and it wouldn’t keep our homes cool. We also wouldn’t have our privacy.( The window shades were found in my bedroom. )( The flag pole was found outside of a school. )

Complex Machines are made up or two or more

simple machines.

The simple machines that make it up:Lever- The lever is the top arm of a stapler. As you push down on the lever,

ittransfers energy into a staple. This helps staple your papers.

Wedge- The staple in a stapler is a wedge. As you push down on the stapler it

sends out a sharp metal staple. This staple pierces through the paper, whichmakes it a wedge.

The simple machines that make it up:Wedge- The wedge is the simple machine that slices open a can. When the

canopener turns the can, this wedge cuts through the metal top.

Lever- The two levers are the arms on the can opener. These levers open and

close on one fulcrum. This helps grip and open the can.

Gear- The gear is a simple machine that grips and helps rotate the can. The

gear uses energy from the turning handle to spin the can around.

Wheel and Axle- The wheel and axle is the rotating handle on the can opener.

Energy transfers to a gear and wedge, when you turn the handle. This is whatrotates and opens the can.
