The MARA program addresses the demand for

highly skilled information governance professionals

who have the education and experience to solve

increasingly complex management challenges faced

by many organizations as their recordkeeping

systems become less efficient as a result of new

technologies, tools, laws, and regulations.

Student Perspective

“There is a growing need for librarians

to expand their advocacy and

leadership skills, and to strive for

long-term relationship building with

decision-makers,” said Thomas

Knutson, who earned his MLIS 15 years

ago at the University of British Columbia

in Vancouver.

The fully online delivery model of the

certificate program has worked well for

Knutson. “Communicating and

collaborating online creates an

interesting dynamic, particularly in

group work. You have to be organized

and prepared with the information you

put forward, but this ultimately leads

to stronger team-building.”

Professionals, with lecturer Mary Ann

Harlan, also provided inspiration for

Gabrielle Doyle. The course taught

students how to design teaching plans

by creating lessons based on desired

outcomes.

“I found that a very interesting

course, and it’s probably changed

the way I approach everything at the

library, including story times,

Parent-Child Mother Goose, and

interacting with library patrons,”

Doyle said.

Canadian Student Profiles

MLIS student Candice Putnam relies on

the technology skills she’s gained at SJSU

SLIS to develop programs at the public

library in Canada where she works. She’s

also the recipient of the School’s

2012 Alumni & Friends Scholarship, which

Putnam will use to support her final year in

the program.

Putnam credits the SJSU SLIS’s fully

online model as critical to her decision to

pursue the degree. “If this wasn’t

available, I would have had to move to

go to school. The classroom

experience has been very cohesive,

and I’ve met other Canadians, too.”

Canadian Student Profiles

Lauren Flattery enrolled in the MLIS

program to broaden her understanding

of librarianship and the future directions

of the field. As a teacher-librarian at a

French immersion school near Toronto,

Canada, Flattery finds that she can

apply her coursework directly to her job.

“Every course I’ve taken, from mobile

technologies to virtual environments

to reference services, changed my

practice or reinforced what I felt was

a good practice,” Flattery said.
