Began in the 7th century by two non-African slave traders Arab Muslims and Europeans.

Arab Muslims sent thousands of slaves each year to North Africa and parts of Asia.

Europeans bought millions of slaves in west and sent them to Europe. Caribbean, North, central and south America.

Buying and selling of slaves were regular activities in Africa.

(1) Chattel Slavery

(2) Debt slavery

(3) Forced Slavery

(4) Serfdom

Chattel slaves are property.

They have no rights and expected to perform labor and sexual favors at the command of slave master.

Chattel slavery still exist in Islamic North Africa.

Labor is provided by the persons who owes the debt.

It is impossible for bonded to escape from debt because it is multiplied during during the period bondage.

Africa has it’s own unique version of debt bondage: Pawnship.

“ Unfree labor”

Forced labor as the name implies was based on the threat of violence against the laborer.

Farm slaves, under control of a landlord.

They have to work on other landlord’s farm.

A Serf also required permission to marry, to sell goods, to change their occupation.

Africa not a continent but small country

Tiny country with no distinct traditions, cultures, or ethnic groups

All African look the same

Slavery has existed since antiquity Most slaves in Africa were war captives Once enslaved an individual has no personal or civil

right Owners can order slaves to do any kind of work,

punish them, and sell them as Chattel Most slaves work in Agriculture Slaves were a form of investment and sign of wealth A detailed system for capturing, selling, and

distributing slaves had been in place for over 500 years

With the arrival of the Europeans and the demand for slaves in the America, the slave trade expanded dramatically

Slaves were sold at Auctions

Buyers physically inspected the slaves, to include their teeth as an indication of the slave’s age

Slaves perform various acts to demonstrate their physical abilities

First Auction: New Amsterdam (Dutch- New York City)

(1) Loss of Population

(2) Society was disrupted

(3) Cities were Distorted

(4) Contact with the outside world ended

(5) Africa as inferior

“master-self-consciousness‟ and a “slave-self-consciousness” are interconnected.

Struggle for recognition No equality in the dialectic

relationship. Each of them prove themselves

recognizing. The Slave Realizes Himself

Through Work and Becomes Eventually Master

Master-Slave both are interdependent and complementary characters

‘Domination’ is the worldly Human desire.

Healthy society exists for the sake of higher person.

‘Will to Power’ is the basic thing for the development of society.

Noble man stands “Beyond good and evil”.

“Master-Morality” Values of master “Slave-Morality” the virtue are

sympathy, kindness and humanity. Psychological vanity of slaves Inferior people naturally see the

superiority of their masters. No Universal rational morality is

exists.
