What is Poverty?

• Poverty is basically the state of being poor such as having a lack of basic materials

• Dictionary.com defines “Poverty” as the state or condition of having little or no money, goods, or means of support; condition of being poor

Background Information

• About 25,000 people die everyday of hunger related issues.

• People in Poverty live in conditions of low quality housing…

• Droughts and floods often destroy their harvests.

The Main Problem

• People are dying. • Children are not getting education.• Selfishness of people, not trying to help the

poor.• Unaware of this issue.• Many people believe that the government is

taking care of it so they don’t have to

How is it affecting the world?

• Half of the world’s population is in poverty• About 25,000 people die everyday because of

starvation.• Factory workers are mainly poor people• Conflicts might happen

What is being done?

• In September 2000, 189 UN member pledged to halve global poverty by 2015.

• 27.5 percent of Indians live below the national income poverty line

• 14% of people in Rajasthan are below the poverty line (15 million people)

• Half of the children are undernourished• Not much children are getting education

• India plays major role in world economy and manufacturing products.

• India is developing rapidly but Poverty is also expanding.

• Poverty won’t end if children don’t get education.

• The child malnutrition rose from 41% to 51% in 2000

• Only 45% of the girls and 55% of boys enrol for primary education

• Only 36% girls and 66% boys enrol for secondary education

issue in India.• AID try to improve India’s poor people and

• They run non formal education centers, literacy camps in urban slums

WUPO

• Our organization name is Wake Up to Poverty Organization (WUPO).

• We focus on the child poverty in Rajasthan.

Our Aims

• Help out the suffering children in Rajasthan by donating money

• Improve the education of the children in Rajasthan

• Inform the public about this issue

Our Short term Plan

• 1)Paste the poster around expat communities• 2) Make the poster in Chinese version and

paste it around local communities• 3) Earn money by selling food and drinks • 4) Donate the money to Shanghai Red Cross

Our Long term Plan

• We would spread the awareness of the issue not just in Shanghai but in places like Nanjing or Hangzhou when we get there by handing out leaflets.

• We would make giving tree bags and give them to international schools so that others could contribute and donate things for the poor.

• People are dying, people are suffering, speak out to this issue, do anything you can to help out. You could spend 50rmb easily on what you want but you could also save a life with that money.
