Smashing out an essay
i.e. How to approach AS1.1
What is expected out of a 1.1 essay?
-Show understanding of specific aspects of the textTHEME
CHARACTER
SETTING
EVENTS
LANGUAGE
Broken down into:
Understanding the Question-Describe-Explain-How and Why? (SPECIFIC EXAMPLES)
First thing to do once you get the question:
Highlight words that are the central focus of the essay, as well as the supporting words.
Describe, character, idea, why, influence.
Explain how it influenced you to understand...and I can relate to...
Use these words to guide your writing - put them in your writing.
[Do this with your own script- Questions 1,2,3,5]
What are some of the things you have to include? How do you plan for this?
1.Character who made you think of an important idea.EXPLAIN WHY. Relevant examples
2.Character that INFLUENCED another character. EXPLAIN how this influence helped you understand them. Relevant examples
3.Important idea. EXPLAIN how it is still RELEVANT today. Relevant examples
5.Important incident. EXPLAIN how it changed events. Relevant examples
Highlight key words and not them down in planning section.
Rewrite the question so that you fully address it.
Notes on choosing setting question:
Setting - home, time, atmosphere and place. Land, environment, place
Tree is a powerful symbol in the setting
Topic sentence-
Answer the question
(can use SYNONYMS here i.e. Important incident/occurrence/event/moment/ point in time etc.)
Explanation-
" It made me aware of ... relationship difficulties and how it applies to my own life."
Language features reveal...
It showed me that...
It is apparent that...
...and say whether it's effective or not and why
Xample-
When you are talking about examples, specify the aspects - tell the reader what they are, be specific.
Language techniques - symbolism is powerful as a language technique in a drama.As an audience we get provoked to visualise the characters or scene.
Quote correctly. Learn the quotes accurately [Markers will most likely know this text]
Refer to pages (20 and 21, 29)
Analysis-
What was his purpose? Explore ideas that were as relevant those days as they were today.
Context - post WW in a society governed by bi-cultural heritage, but less liberal than they are today.
An important idea that is still relevant in society today...Iconic, indigenous, native, bicultural society - all good words to know!
In Christian culture it is appropriate that we draw relevance from...
Avoid "The Bible says..." "And we have to...“ you have to be objective
Make the reference, but use it in third person
Use the phrase "Christian Culture"
Introduction –
Title, author, purpose, specified aspects.
Clarify what the text is - drama/play
"Mason's crafted use of dialogue is effective in helping me think about the important idea." I.e. show the writer deliberately doing something.
Conclusion–
Refer back to the question.
No NEW information- if you have saved your best analysis or quotes for a ‘big finish’ then you have wasted some of your best resources.
If you feel you have repeated yourself, use your vast verbose phraseology to cite several synonyms…
just use different words.
